Newell Left Team: Confirmed via Shinn/Emig

In his mind going home may be the only choice. For personal reasons, I hate to see him go. I also know, more than likely, gutting it out at your initial choice of colleges, would benefit him greatly.

Anyway, he was one of the things I liked about this team.:facepalm

Wish him the best of luck but this is very disappointing. I was really looking forward to seeing Calvin shine here.

I can just see you so riled up and frothing at the mouth that you can't even type coherent insults. "You don't more about this team than a man in the moon?" What?

Anyway, this is coming from someone, who as a 19 year old, made an idiotic decision to transfer colleges. Kids that age are prone to making decisions without their long term interests clearly in focus. We have had 3 football players leave the team this season, two of whom decided their reasons for leaving weren't very good since they both subsequently asked back onto the team.

You seem like you suck...the guy has lost two close family members in the last few years. Hell, I was considering transferring back to a school in Michigan after fall semester last year because I was homesick, and I haven't had nearly as hard of a life as Cal has.

Don't do it. I grew up outside of Detroit. The best thing that ever happened to me was my parents moving to Oklahoma. I would be living in Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Illinois or somewhere like that if they had not moved. Now I live in nice weather where the economies are strong and I am fortunate to be an OU graduate. It is good to be an OU fan. It would have been hard to a Michigan fan over the last 20 years (with the exceptoin of one or two seasons).

You're admitting to almost leaving school for a stupid reason. not sure how that proves anything.

As for Calvin, I'm sorry for his losses. If there is family business that has to be taken care of in the wake of family deaths, than that's a legitimate reason to transfer. If he's transferring because he's homesick, he'll likely regret it.

Have you moved across the country? It is hard. You have to make new friends, things are different, and you don't quite fit in. It takes a couple of years to make good friends. I have done it three times and had the benefit of being married the 2nd and 3rd time and being with my family the1st time.

Oh, I'm not doing it. I'm having a great time at OU now. But a year ago at this time I was miserable, and if I hadn't met a few people near the end of last semester who made me less homesick, I would have done it. It's perfectly reasonable to assume that Cal believes he will have more fun playing for a school back east, and that's why I can't really argue with his decision to transfer. Really I think the lesson to be learned here is focus on recruiting players closer to Oklahoma, and thankfully I think the current coaching staff is doing this.

This is a major blow to the program. I swear if it were not for bad luck, OU would have no luck when it comes to basketball since the completion of the 1990 season. Just think:

1990 - Jackie Jones, Smokey McCovery and Damon Patterson don't make grades (and according to rumor it was due to an internal OU standard imposed due to problems with the football team and may have been the reason Tubbs left)

1992ish - Bryan Sallier injured going into post season play

1994 - Tubbs shocks OU fans by resigning to take TCU job

1995 - Team is out of gas and gets upset by Manhatten (perhaps not bad luck but I feel entitled to a big list today)

1996ish - Bobby Joe Evans has a major knee problem forcing him to quit playing basketball

1998ish - Humphreys (an Oklahoma kid) transfers to play SF only to PF at Notre Dame

2001 - JR Raymond dismissed from team going into post season

2002 - Q. White injured right before final four

Bookout injurs shoulder (can't remember when this happened, team has about 6 guys by the end of the year)

2004ish - Lavendar and McKensie leave team before what probably would have been a great year

2005ish Phonegate begins, Sampson leaves

OU signs a great class, Sampson leaves, Reynolds and James don't come to OU

Blake Griffin has a freak injury in Austin causing a concussion, misses two games and OU draws North Carolina in the Elite 8.

WW - apparently a head case that is uncontrollable after Blake Griffin Leaves

Tiny Gallon and TMG - how does OU get two guys this good with a bad attitudes at the same time?

Two of the worst years ever at OU.

Now Calvin Newell leaves the team when he is playing and one of the top scorers.

We need some freaking breaks.

I think God should implant springs into Fitzgeralds' legs or otherwise intervene with a miracle.

Quite an impressive rundown. That had me recollect on a lot of bad breaks as well. A few tidbits:

1) We would've been nasty in '01 with Raymond and Humphrey. Elite status for sure.

2) Hollis Price's lingering hamstring in '03 needs to be added as well. Doubt that would've made the difference vs. Syracuse's 2-3 zone that season, but I hated for him that he wasn't 100% in his last tournament.

3) Blake's injury was a ridiculous string of bad luck, for a few reasons. Happened to be during our biggest 2 game stretch of the season (both games went down to the wire, without him nonetheless). It was a primary reason why OU didn't win the conference title that season. Furthermore, say OU had Blake and won both games (very possible)... OU probably gets a 1 seed or at least doesn't get placed in the same region as UNC (which happened to have one of the most dominating tournament performances in NCAA history). Therefore, OU's chances of a Final 4 run would've been much better.

I glad that happened for you. If you stay in this part of the country, I suspect the day will come when you cannot even imagine living in the winters of Midwest. I am far to weak to do it now (of couse the fine people of the midewest probably can't handle a summer in Oklahoma or Texas any better than I can handle their winter but I would rather be hot than cold).

What a huge blow. Just when you start getting excited about this team and the strides it is making, we have another setback. I'm still excited for this team and hope for some good strides this season, but that's a big loss.

Hale said on radio because of deaths in family and family putting pressure on him to come home because of deaths

This just makes me sad.

At least we get a couple easier games and a week of practice to adjust before we play Arkansas.

Well, I thought it was something like this, but now that James Hale said it, I'm not so sure.

Like I said in an earlier post, I went away from home for school and transferrred back. And it was a stupid decision made for the wrong reasons. Being "homesick" is not a good reason to transfer.

All I know is about the time I start feeling positive about our basketball program again, this comes up. It's time we start getting some good breaks, we've had plenty of the bad ones. I wish Calvin the best. I sure hate to see him go.

Just a heads up, if you can't discuss Cal leaving civilly and respect each other this thread is being shut down.

yes Sooners have confirmed that he has left the team and will still root on the team

Well, now I'm sure Hield or Hornbeak will get some playing time next season.
