Newell Left Team: Confirmed via Shinn/Emig

Well, that sucks...we'll move on and I hope this decision works out for Calvin in the long haul. Being selfish, I want him at OU, but there is probably a really good reason that nobody on here can really know.

This sucks for the team. I hope everything goes well with him and his family.

This really makes me sick. I hope Pledger is in good shape because he's going to need to play 35 minutes a game.

Actually it means Carl Blair is going to play sg some. How well does Kruger shoot the 3? Pledger is clearly going to play a bunch but he has to get some rest. OU only has three scholarship guards on the team now. Thank goodness they signed two sg.

The loss of TJ Taylor is hurting even more today.

I wonder if there is any chance Calvin will reconsider? I also wonder why he left immediately rather than complete the semester? I suspect he wanted to fair to his teammates and coach by telling as soon as he made up his mind.

I sure hope he doesn't leave before taking finals. He needs to use his basketball skills to get a college degree.

I really hate to hear this.

I thought Calvin was going to be a star for us over the next 2.5 seasons, but I wish him well and will be cheering for him to prosper wherever he lands. I love the kids energy and enthusiasm.

Good luck, Calvin!

Kills our guard depth this year, and makes the NIT a tough goal. LK will figure out something to keep us competitive, but we don't have a lot of guys that are really good at scoring the basketball. Newell was one of them, when he was hot.

Dang! This is not the kind of news I wanted to hear. I feel bad for the team, but feel even worse for a young man who was beginning to blossom as a player.

Best of luck in whatever you do in the future, Calvin!

Man, this stinks. He's been my favorite player on this year's team.

Never easy to have these problems, especially when your only 20 years old. Hope he does well where ever it is he winds up...

I'd say about 80% of the time these transfers don't end up well. I cannot imagine a family member pressuring a kid to leave school a couple weeks before finals.

You don't know what the situation is. If there are deaths in the family, then he may have to move home to take care of family members. It's a tough break and I wish him well. Nonetheless, tough break for a team that was really making some strides.

This is really strange and I hate to see it. Hopefully the team can come together and still make a nice run this year. We're going to miss his spark off the bench tremendously. Someone will need to step up big time. Sucks!

Wow, really sucks. Like I said, he had more potential to be big time (at the college level) than any other player on the team. He was my favorite player to watch, and he was going to be a great scorer on the season and over the course of his career.

The only thing I'd say is, if a KID has to move back to take care of family in the middle of getting his/her college education, then something is out of whack...UNLESS there's just no other family around. If the Newell had as rough an upbringing as everyone says, he's been doing what he can to change that path later in his life by staying away from that and getting an education without those distractions. I hope nothing but the best for him, appreciate his dedication to his family and pray it all works out for him in the long run...

Hale said on radio because of deaths in family and family putting pressure on him to come home because of deaths

I understand the sadness but how can he help by transferring, presumably he will still be attending college and have homework and maybe still play ball? I say let him take the rest of the semester off, greive and try to heal and then reassess.
