Open Letter to AdaSooner and Mods

I was one of the original mods on this board, tasked with helping migrate people over from the James Hale board. Then, sadly, I was fired. Don't remember why, exactly, but I am glad not to have the responsibility anymore.

It's because you left to form Big12Hoops.com ;)

I stay away from the game threads because they can be a cess pool. I wish people would cool off before posting but maybe the game threads are, in a sense, cathartic. I also get annoyed by ridiculous threads like "Lon Kruger is a terrible in game coach" and "we have to make this year count because next year will be awful." Presumably, those posters have had time to cool off after the game and they still post that tripe.

I do, however, want to attempt to put a positive spin on the negativity. Kruger, Hield, et al have raised expectations for the program and that's a great thing. The fact that so many choose to be hyper critical, even when they're way off-base, is indicative of higher expectations. I think the fact that expectations are so much higher than a few years back is a great thing. They need perspective and some patience with people who are 19-22 years old, but it's good that so many expect so much more out of this team. Say what you want about Kruger, but he has brought a passion for this program that it sorely needed.

Don't be coy. It's because you were outed as a Communist. Pink as they come! Like a big, juicy steak!

Look, I've posted this a million times: I don't mind constructive criticism at all as long as it's accompanied with logical explanation and not "Player sucks!". I didn't delete any posts Wednesday night or in the days after and I don't think the other mods did much either.

I just wish we had as much excitement on the boards after big wins as angst after losses. That's it. It sucks, but it is what it is. I'm kinda like what 04 said above. When OU loses, I want to crawl into a hole. Younger OUHoops would be ready to spit fire after an upset loss. Older OUHoops, with multiple kids nowadays, doesn't want to read message boards after a loss. He wants to watch Frozen for the 1000th time with his little girl or have a nerf gun fights with the little dude. Now, when OU wins a big game, I want to revel in it.

Obviously, from what we've seen this year that's not going to happen. Hopefully that changes if a deep tourney run is made.

You guys do a great job. Visited many a message board but never felt compelled to post until I came here. Keep up the good work.

I believe you, MN, and Ada do a really good job. I only post on two other bball forums and they aren't even OU boards. IMO, it seems that a few on here don't want any criticism of the team at all and on the other side, a few more who want to mostly criticize. I think there is room for everyone as long as there aren't personal attacks on players or on other posters. We need differing opinions to make this forum successful....otherwise we become a cult...a'la Texas A*M.

And this is, by far, the TAMEST board that I've ever read or been a part of. Anyone who believes that the criticism is too much or it's too explicit, then I would invite those folks to visit Shaggybevo, Phog.net, Rupp Rafters, etc. and you will see what real venom and bile towards players/coaches actually looks like. Even our rowdy posters are choir boys compared to what is spewed on those boards. I'm not making excuses, but I think it's fair to say we have a good cross-section of fans and opinions on here.

And I admit that I can get upset a little during some game threads, but I love OU and am passionate about the success of my alma mater. And I attempt to reinforce positives along with the criticism. Some may take my criticisms the wrong way, but I'm not worried about pleasing everyone or winning a popularity contest. There are some posters on here who I would enjoy grabbing a beer (or diet coke) with and talking basketball, while others I would rather not spend one second with.....but that is life.

I don't mind seeing criticism as long as posters can try to not let emotion and ignorance write the post. Many on here put together very well thought out posts with very good critical comments. Others make ridiculous posts or start topics that will obviously blow up in their face. That gets old and tired. I say show up after wins with as much excitement as you do after losses with critical comments. That'd be nice to see.

This says it all for me ... excerpts from OUHoops:

. . . . . I don't mind constructive criticism at all as long as it's accompanied with logical explanation and not "Player sucks!"

. . . . . I just wish we had as much excitement on the boards after big wins as angst after losses.

. . . . . when OU wins a big game, I want to revel in it.

The close losses are heart-breaking to all of us; even to the "optimistic" fans. Poor play by the OU team is frustrating to all of us; sometimes, extremely frustrating. But when the Sooners win a big one, I would like to amplify (or maximize) my fan-joy by sharing it with other OU fans. But, compared to the angst following a loss, the celebration almost seems muted after a big win.

At this point, I guess my most enjoyable fan experience, after all these years of being a fan that attends the games, comes from watching the joy of the young men on the team when they achieve success on the road. You have to attend a lot of road games to experience many wins, but they sure are sweet. It ain't easy to win on the road.

I very much enjoy reading many of the posters on this board, as some of you post observations that I find interesting, or even educational. This certainly includes logical and thoughtful criticisms. Many of you have become old friends on the keyboard.

This is the best board around.

The old saying, "some things never change," definitely applies to the furor that follows an OU loss. If you want to see "old friends" on the board who rarely post after a win, that's the time to do it. I was a mod on the Insider board and I have been here since this board's inception six and a half years ago. It has always been that way, and I don't expect it to change anytime soon.

The only difference after the WVU game was the lack of excitement after a huge win. That surprised even an old fan board fart like me. Truth be known, I'm betting half or more of the regulars on this board expected OU to lose in Morgantown. To be perfectly honest, I was one of them. I based my silent prediction on our performance of late, as well as the knowledge that WVU is not only good, they rarely lose on their own floor.

I started one thread but really didn't post much after the game. I chose to celebrate the win in relative silence, somewhat relieved and happy for a "night off" from the mad rush to voice an opinion that always follows a loss. But, make no mistake, I was thrilled by what everyone on this board had to know was an outstanding win on the road! Better still, we saw the old OU team in that game, the one that fights for loose balls, plays defense with some intensity and rebounds with a determined effort to find a way to win.

good work! thanks a bunch.

Some here would call me a "sunshine pumper," to which I can only say "thank you." It's a title I'll wear proudly as a totally unashamed, unabashed fan of the Oklahoma Sooners.

This doesn't mean I'm not devastated any time the Sooners lose. I love OU basketball and I expect my Sooners to win every game they play. And I can, and often do, voice criticisms/concerns whenever my Sooners perform poorly. But I'll be hanged if I'll allow my disappointment over a loss to be reflected in negative, vulgar or insulting posts about the OU players and coaches.

Very well put. My sentiments exactly.

The game thread for many is much akin to the atmosphere surrounding a poker game played amongst friends and most of everything which ensues is directly a function of this.

I'm guilty of criticizing this team when they don't win. I'll also give it up to them when the do win. Winning @ WV is not an easy thing to do. The fact is Lattin has to show up every single night. Not get in foul trouble. It's crazy how much better everyone is when we have post presence. The hustle was real. The 50/50 balls were coming our way as well.
