OT: Football Talk

Again, I don't care how good a coach and the players are...losing your top 5 WRs is going to make you suck.
And this all happened with a crappy OC and one of the hardest schedules in years.

For Defensive efficiency:

OU played #s 4, 5, 10, 11, 17, 27, 44, 94

UT played #s 2,13, 42, 51, 53, 63, 65, 75

We need him -- just saw that the Tulane QB is going to Duke. Any idea what our backup plan is if Mateer doesn't come?
No clue. Idk anything on a back up plan yet. They better have one. But also, mateer would be crazy to not take the 7 figure deal imo. Where else is he going to go?

Word on the street was that WSU was not going to sit idly by and let us have him. They are supposedly gonna counter with a big deal of their own.

Check the thread. Boulder is the one who downplayed the WRs we are losing. I just wonder who would have thrown the ball to them or blocked for them even if they were available. Look at Burks. We heard all spring and summer that he was going to be a game changer and a home run hitter because of his speed and quickness, and he averaged 7.9 yards per catch because we rarely threw the ball more than five yards behind the LOS.
which is directly related to having to start the 4TH STRING CENTER early in the season ..

and missing the top 3 OT's most of the season ..

I mean, come on Boulder -- all season, a common theme from the fan base was some version of, "we will be fine once we get the WRs back." I never believed that because our offense is bad at every position and our offensive staff is terrible, but it's disingenuous to act like it's not a bad sign that the position group that was supposed to be our strength is now going to have to start from scratch.

It's the worst health we've ever seen from WRs. It was a big deal. But why would you bring back 5 dudes that are injury-prone? You have to take that money and spend it on healthier people.

Are you suggesting they aren’t leaving voluntarily?

I don't have any inside info, but I would guess some are being offered less NIL money--perhaps even none--as opposed to being shown the door.

That is correct. I don't think they forced anybody out the door if they were willing to walk-on. If we had identified Farooq as a crucial piece, like Burks or RMT, we absolutely would have found the money to lock him down.

I believe Anderson is the only person on the entire offense we wouldn't have retained by matching the top offer and playing time.

Playing time? I can’t follow these arguments. We’ve spent the last three months hearing how good these guys are and how much we miss them and how it’s impossible to win when you are missing your top five WRs, but now you’re suggesting some of them are leaving in part because they don’t think they’ll get playing time?

depends on what you are talking about .. but yes ..

very much a i have a 200k offer from x school (dollar value is made up) will you match it .. and OU says no we won't ..
Farooq supposedly got a 800k offer from Maryland per his "agent". We didn't even counter bc that's crazy.

Nic Anderson same story but heard 750k. Don't know which school yet - tenn. Ohio state and i can't remember the 3rd. I blame nic for a lot of the issues in the WR room BTW.

Andrel we weren't that crazy about keeping regardless

new team new roster ... just because they would play this year and we missed them doesn't mean that would be true next season

If you’re confident Brent and co. are capable of bringing in and developing better guys, I’m not sure how you’re reaching that conclusion.

It’s not real hard to improve on 4 catches for 62 yards b/w Anderson/Anthony and Farooq
It also shouldn’t be hard to not have one of the worst offenses in history when you coach at OU, but here we are.

Curious, how many impact transfers has Brent brought in over his three years, especially on offense? One comes to mind and he will be at the Heisman ceremony tomorrow, but Brent mismanaged the roster so badly that he didn’t stick around. I have no idea how anyone can feel like we are likely to end up with a bunch of great WRs.

Well if it’s that bleak, he probably won’t be the coach after next year.

With Gabriel I don’t think anyone has a clue on what happened…was it mismanaged or did Oregon out bid them with a $2 million + year deal.

Walter Rouse was a key piece they brought in from Stanford and solidified the OLine two years ago, Nwaiou was pretty solid at Guard this year

Outside of Gabriel and Dion Burks they haven’t really spent a lot of $ on portal transfers on Offense

They were speaking as if 2023 was DG's final season before that season began. There was not attempt to retain him. They had their much ballyhooed five-star in JA. I think if they'd told DG early on they wanted him to lead them into the SEC and backed it up with some cash, he'd have stayed. He only went shopping because OU had not shown any interest in his return. And when they finally did (if they ever did), it was too late.

I was calling out that decision long before the 2023 season ended. The last thing I wanted was for us to enter the SEC with an inexperienced sophomore QB. I thought that was a recipe for disaster even before all the WR and OL injuries. Unfortunately, I was right. I dearly wish I'd been wrong.
