OU Men tied for 2nd going into final day of NCAA Golf Championship

Boomer!

I admit i'm a bandwagon OU golf fan...and any other sport besides football and basketball. I just don't have the time to invest in all the sports seasons. But I'm not a bandwagon OU fan...so I really enjoy watching the various sports postseasons!

And the Dalke story is really fascinating. Crimson blood runs through that family's veins.

Dalke was huge in the post-season....no doubt.

but, UO was in bad shape when Reinertson won 16 and Hirschman won 16 and 17 to get both matches back to all square.

at that point, even though Raza from UO made a big birdie to get to 2 down with 2 to play against Dalke.....teamwise with 4 holes combined to play in all 3 matches....as i understand it, all Oklahoma had to do was halve one of the 4 remaining holes to win. high probability. in about 15 minutes, Ducks went from needing something spectacular in one match (Dalke-Raza) to needing something in every match. low probability.

props all around....great team effort this week.

i like the match play format for a team championship but 72 holes qualifying and then 3 rounds of match play seems like helluva lot of golf to play. like turning the Final Four hoops into best of 5 series. great sport....maybe....lot of play.

I understand the Pokes frustration in that match play definitely aids the fluke factor making an appearance. A team can get hot, like our 2017 NATIONAL CHAMPIONS, and ride that crest to the trophy. I get that, because I'd hate to see a team lead stroke-play qualifying by a jillion and then run into a few hot putters.

But I do not care. I am absolutely bursting with pride this morning. I love OU Golf. I attended OU Golf Camp under Grost. I'm in the Chip-In Club. I met Coach Hybl the week he was hired and had an inkling he might be the man for the job after Ragan left Carthaginian ruins in his wake. When Dalke left the 2.5-footer that nobody on the planet wants to leave himself I just about crawled under the couch.

We were solid all year. Not great, pretty good, but this is out of left field. Maybe even beyond that......maybe even the cheap seats. I may max out the credit card buying souvenirs and swag. I only buy the Oklahoman on monumental sporting occasions (I'm still pissed their name is on the stadium) but today I make that exception.

BOOMER SOONER!

I don't follow golf, and I know this came out of nowhere, but I can't see the logic behind calling this a product of match play. We were #2 in stroke-play, so we only jumped up one spot. If anybody could complain, it's Vanderbilt, not OSU.

I was an avid golfer once (played to a respectable six handicap) before back problems sent me to the locker room permanently. I still enjoy watching good golf, and make no mistake yesterday's match was as good as it gets, especially for an OU fan. I was on the edge of my seat until Dalke made that little too long putt to call it a gimme to put an end to any doubt the Sooners would win their second national championship.

This team knocked off Baylor after falling behind in all five matches, beat a scrappy Illinois team in their own backyard and put an end to the Duck's hopes of repeating last year's title run. It should also be noted that everyone on this team except McGreevey will be back next year. As Oregon will attest, a repeat is not easy. It's still something to look forward to for OU fans.

The Aggies are complaining because they haven't won a national title since 2006, and the NCAA switched to match-play in 2008. They have finished runner-up twice in that span. I have it in my head that they've led stroke-play by a mile a couple of times, so they're probably still a little bitter about those.

Oh well. Aggies. What can you say?

I made the original comment regarding the pokes only to chuckle at the timing of their objection.

Vanderbilt finished 4 rounds of stroke play 12 strokes ahead of 2nd place OU and 20 strokes ahead of 8th place UNLV but began match play tied with their opponent UNLV. So the goal of stroke play is to finish in the top 8. The only difference in the top 8 is seeding for match play. That doesn't seem quite right and definitely made for TV.

But when I check the final result of match play, it makes total sense. The greatest golf team ever just won the National Championship. Boomer Sooner!

Next year the NCAA Championship is at Karsten Creek in Stillwater. Imagine the possibilities.....

oh let them complain away. that format has been used in different sports tournaments for decades. We used it for years in state and regionals for USSSA, AABC, LLWS and AAU in baseball and basketball. any format used will leave someone rubbed raw. it's part of the game.

Matchplay is the best thing they can do for the game below the professional level, IMO. Finding a scoring method different than the strokes to par currently used would also help dramatically elsewhere. Having a really terrible hole hurt you much more than a really great hole helps you just sucks. Matchplay alleviates that to a large degree, while keeping matches exciting and still rewarding skill.

I mean, just in golf in general, it's a pretty miserable feeling to shell out $80 for a green fee plus cart on a Saturday morning, and start your day out 6 over through 3 holes, knowing that you've already shot your chance at a decent score.

Poke fans have *****ed about match play pretty much since it's inception. I think in the first or second year of the new format(or maybe both) they won stroke play only to come up short in match play. As someone mentioned one year they won stroke play by 20 over the runner-up but again couldn't win match play. What's really funny is that the idea of the format switch is pretty much credited to Mike Holder.

In terms of golf, it probably seems like a gimmick. In terms of other sports, though, it's the standard. In no other sport does winning by 40 in game 1 have any effect on game 2.

Again, I'm not a golf guy, so it's not my fight.

Let the Pokes whine. I doubt if anyone who matters gives a flip what they think.

Besides, match play is a much better format for team golf than stroke play. The best golfing competition on the planet, the Ryder Cup, uses various forms of match play to decide the outcome every two years between the best of the U. S. and the best of Europe.

The Ryder Cup is one of my favorite events in any sport. It wouldn't be nearly as exciting if stroke play was used to determine the winner.

Who is going to start a Golf Message Board that the football team can be proud of????
