For the first time since before anyone on its starting lineup was born, Owasso's girls basketball team will have something to do the Friday of state championship week.
After edging Choctaw by 10 points in the opening round of the 6A basketball tournament Thursday in the Mabee Center, the Rams (21-7) are headed to a 10:30 a.m. semifinal game against Broken Arrow, the top-ranked returning champion.
It will be the first semifinal appearance for ninth-ranked Owasso since 1990 but the fourth game against the No. 1 Tigers this season.
"We've gotta come out and be ready, lot's of energy," Owasso point guard Rachel Skalnik said.
Broken Arrow, Frontier Valley Conference champion with a 24-3 record, got 18 points from Alexis Gauldin and scooted into Friday's early semifinal with an easy confidence.
Skalnik hit the shot that sustained her team midway through the fourth quarter when Choctaw's Ana Llanusa gave her team its first lead.
After Llanusa's three-point play put the Yellowjackets (23-3) up 37-35 with 5:21 left, Skalnik wasted no time in traversing the court for a 3-pointer to regain the lead.
"I was just like, 'I've gotta score,'" Skalnik said. "It's a once in a lifetime game, so why not take it?"
Three more lead changes followed in the next 60 seconds before Owasso mounted a 10-4 run at the end of the game for the final margin.
Owasso's sophomore Mya Bhinhar led all scorers with 19 points on 7 of 16 shooting to go along with seven rebounds, two steals, a block, and two assists. Skalnik finished with 17.
Owasso built its lead as high as 11 points in the third before Zahria White piled up a double-double of 10 points on 12 rebounds for Choctaw.
"She just kind of took over the second half," Sweeney said. "[Leiloni Culley] got tired and they took advantage of it."
