Perry Jones returning to Baylor for sophomore season

this is a shocker to Baylor and to Drew. The Brendan Wright comparison is a good one. Brendan made a terrible decision to go pro.

He made $750k a year after taxes and agent fees and is likely done as a pro- at least in the NBA. Financially it is all about getting the 2nd contract and endorsements. If you go too early and miss that 2nd contract and the endorsements, financially it may be a bad choice.

The NCAA allows a player to purchase a disability policy and delay payments to protect a guy from the injury scenario. They end up making more after tax with that disability policy than they do in salary for 3 years if they get injured.

Perry's family values things different than a lot of people. They want him to be ready physically, emotionally and spiritually for NBA life. They didn't feel he was ready. And I think Perry is a kid that wasn't ready for that pressure.

Will he ever be? Good question. Blake Griffin, Jared Sullinger have a different mental make-up of Perry Jones. They were probably ready after their freshman years mentally for life in the NBA. But anyone that watched Baylor a lot last year would tell you that Perry needs a lot of seasoning before he's ready for the NBA...

haha.

Wow, what a terrible decision. He is a guaranteed lottery pick. He has nothing to prove at Baylor.

Hopefully he doesn't blow his knee out or something.

Blake was a guaranteed Lottery pick after his freshman season as well. Turned out pretty good for him, and OU.

After hearing the analysts whine about one-and-dones ruining the college and NBA game, it is good to see someone come back who feels they still need to develop themselves more.

He might have been but he was a fringe lottery pick if I remember right. He could have easily dropped out of the lottery after his freshman year. A lot of people thought Willie Warren was a lottery pick after his freshman year also.

Blake made the right decision to come back obviously.

wrong wright made 1.8-2.0 mil (after taxes) last year alone in year 4 of his contract .. he made over 7 mil after taxes in 4 years as a pro

Always taken with a grain of salt, but as far as all the projections are concerned I don't ever remember seeing Blake out of the Top 10 before he declared.

Capel said that there was one organization that told him they were going to draft him had they not had the #1 pick. And I remembered Chad Ford (who I think has the most insight/sources of all the analysts) always saying that scouts were in love with his immense talents. I seriously doubt he would've dropped out of the lottery had he gone in 2008.

Not every decision is about money.

The NBA and its money will be there, whether he goes now or three years from now (and even if he gets injured). As soon as he takes that step, he's leaving behind forever the opportunity to really just be a kid. In the NBA, it's a career working alongside grown men. In college, you're a kid hanging out and playing a game you love with your friends. You can't ever really go back once you take that step forward.

Valid point. I don't think it's a bad decision because it's all about what he wants. I do think it's risky from a financial standpoint though... He is all but guaranteed a lottery spot this year, and I don't know if he has the mental make-up to improve and flourish in Year 2 like everyone has expected all along at Baylor. If he doesn't flourish, two years of underwhelming results (relative to his talent) may not bode well for him when he goes declares.

Ask WWIII what it means to be a lock lottery pick after you freshman season only to come back

There are way too many cases of guys leaving after their freshman years when they most definitely should not have. And there are guys who should have left after their freshman year just to see their stock drop the next year(s). I commend Perry for sticking around for another year, whether it's to enjoy another year of college, or to get bigger, or to gain more experience, or whatever the case. Always refreshing to see, even if that means we have to face him a few times during the season which won't be fun.

Your numbers may be accurate. Regardless, there are a couple things that are true and I speak from experience as one who has had financial dealings with pro athletes as clients:

1. Most 18-26 year olds have very little if any wealth after their first contract despite pleadings from advisors.
2. The 2nd contract and endorsement deals is where some athletes are able to put aside some investment wealth.

There are exceptions and Perry may be one of those. I'm just speaking in generalities. And I speak from experience. Most of these kids would be wise to stay 2-3 years and develop maturity and build their brand.

the second contract thing IS what agents and club officials talk about a lot to these players. You have a specific window (under the existing labor agreement) to get that second contract at the time you are at your peak skills-wise and physically. Miss it and you miss millions and millions.

With Baylor's history of underachievement, I'm surprised he would return for another year. Maybe Jones will at least get to experience the NIT next year.

they used to never say Baylor underachieved... You have to win and raise expectations in order to underachieve. Baylor is like most NCAA programs outside the top 15 programs. They are striving for consistency. Some years they have the pieces and some years they don't.

Next year will have a lot more in common with their 2009-2010 elite 8 team. They will be much better without Dunn but more importantly with the additions of Quincy Miller and Pierre Jackson.

Pierre will be a huge upgrade for them at PG. And Baylor will have the best "finisher" frontcourt in college basketball with Quincy Miller; Perry Jones; Quincy Acy; Anthony Jones; Cory Jefferson and Deuce Bello.

Now if they only had someone to actually COACH them...
