This was my first time observing a practice... it was intense with plenty of individual instruction. The players look very strong ( Especially Buddy) and appear to be in great shape.
First 20 min: Half court man to man team defense... There was a lot of coaching going on especially for the true freshman. I was impressed with the returning starters. They were intense and effective against screens. There is a definite drop off with the backups.
Then there was a session of half court man offense with plenty of coaching after each play. The redshirt and true freshman are much better on offense than defense. Odoms and Walker were effective penetrators. However, inside scoring could be problematic.
Buddy has improved his ball handling and now has a very good crossover. He also has developed a step back jumper. Cousins appeared to be the primary facilitator... the reports of Cousins playing more point guard and woodard the 2 seem to be playing out.
The next session was half court zone offense. Passing was better against a zone and shooting was also effective.
The last session was full court man to man. Pressure defense and trapping was emphasized. Buddy and Isaiah are going to get a lot steals.
Lon also pushed for fast transition and putting up the first good shot.
It was an impressive 2 hour practice. The standouts were the returning starters... They all appear skilled, quick, and confident.
The defense and shooting will be better than last year. Quick effective passing
needs to continue to improve.
