Prep Spotlight: Unsigned 2011 OKC players

Did Raney not make the list? Or did he sign with somebody?

Since we had already done a spotlight on Raney we left him off this list. Similar to Josh Richardson.

Recently heard from Marquis Buxton-Hill, the 6'9 prospect out of Douglass High and he said that Florida and Oklahoma State are now inquiring about his play.

WJ, I apologize in advance for putting you on the spot with this question. How many post players on our current roster would Buxton-Hill leap-frog with a little experience if OU signed him? I'm not asking you for names, just how he would stack up against what I personally believe is too much dead weight on this team. And, I'm not talking about Osby and Goff, who will be eligible next year. Those were good gets as far as I'm concerned.

I don't want to fashion myself as a high level evaluator, but I think he has more potential than most of the post players on OU's roster. His measuring stick will be 6'9 Robert Goff since both are true centers. I believe his upside is higher than current post players on the roster. The problem at Douglass is they have a lot talented players, so he doesn't get the focus of attention. He also is not as active as Romond Jenkins who is Douglass's most active post player.

As it stands now, he is working to qualify, but seeking a division one scholarship and working his way for a high major offer. With big men being a hot commodity by most coaches, if he qualifies he'll have a very good chance at a major offer.

As of right now, the only post player target that I know of OU to be targeting is Phillip Jurick of Chattanooga Junior College. OU has recently just officially offered Elijah Carter of Brewster Prep in New Hampshire. Also, Cezar Guerrero informed me thursday that he had an extended telephone conversation with Jeff Capel about his recruitment. He said the call went very well.

I do not believe OU is currently targeting any current 2011 kids instate. Josh Richardson and Dominique Raney are the best candidates, but neither are point guards. I spoke with a high level ex-assitant coach and he told me that he believes Raney will eventually get a high major offer, especially if he improves on his spot up 3pt shots. Richardson is weighing his options and considering reclassifying himself as a 2012 recruit. Richardson has just turned seventeen and may mature more physically if he makes that choice.

Thanks for the update, WJ!

I haven't seen Raney play in the last two seasons, except on video. But I was sure impressed with his potential as a freshman and sophomore. If he can't shoot from the perimeter, he would fit in nicely, don't you think? ;)

Buxton-Hill's game reminds me of Fitz. Similar body types and neither are exceptional athletes. Both at times look unorthodex at times with their post moves but they seem to have found ways to make them work. If Buxton-Hill's jumper continues to improve the comparison will become even more apt.

Also I'm not saying he's as good as Fitz I'm just comparing his playing style to Andrew. If Buxton-Hill continues to be more aggressive (ala what I saw when he took it to Austin) I think he's the type that prep school or juco could do wonders for and he could be a high mid major player or play for a weaker BCS team.

Great evaluation. I think Buxton-Hill could be a guy that could be pretty good down the road or he could get buried on the bench at a program. The biggest negative is he just isn't a very good athlete, he doesn't run or jump very well. He also has kind of thin shoulders so I don't see him really bulking up that much.

What he does have is a very unorthodox game which makes him tough to defend because his shots come from weird angles. He also is aggressive when he gets the ball and isn't afraid to work for his shot.

I recently spoke to Marquis Buxton-Hill who informed me that OSU coaches have been coming to watch him at his games. With Karron Johnson's situation in limbo, he could be a viable option for the Cowboys.

The Jenkins twins are kind of intriguing. Eddie Sutton got lucky with a couple of 6'7" twins a few years ago.

They may be too raw. Like shorter versions of Perry Shaw. Hill has a little skill behind him. I see OSU is going after pgs and post players pretty hard. Did Johnson sign? What's the deal now that he's kicked off of his juco team?

Rumor is that OSU may move on. That's why I think they will look for a frontcourt player. Who knows though.

I'd like to take credit for dropping the Karron Johnson story. Dropped it three weeks before it broke on osu websites.:eddie187_jpg_xs:

Read a blurb in The Oklahoman that said Dominique Raney "already has more than a dozen offers, including Oklahoma State". Anyone know who all has offered him at this point? Is the OSU offer still on the table?

I love the Raney camp and his dad is a real good guy, but they've been throwing that OSU offer around for about 3 years. I'd be shocked if it's still on the table, but I know some AAU types and I'll find out. I've noticed that OSU is chasing a lot of players and pgs mores specifically. They have about 7 offers out.

OKC Storm center Rex Farmer is starting to gain a lot of attention from college coaches. A major junior college prospect is now on the verge of getting a division one offer from a mid major Texas school.
