Question about Mustang boys...

The coaches aren't out recruiting players openly. Parents who have kids with aspirations start looking in the 6th or 7th grade for the school/district that gives their kids the best chance at success. I know a kid who is currently in 6th grade who's parents are trying to determine where in the Metro area they should move to. In other words, who has a program/coach that I would like my son to play for where he can succeed and have a chance to do something that all HS kids dream of, play for a state championship and possibly a college scholarship. Coach Long has a lot of contacts due to his summer coaching. Kids see him and they decide to go play for him. or a handful of others. The mediocre teams will never compete for state championships because the good or great players who grow up in those districts will leave for better programs at about the middle school age. that's what has happened at Mustang, and a few other schools. Coach Long has a little advantage in that he has a son who also probably talks to kids who are potential prospects.

More like come win a state tournament and be guaranteed to be seen multiple times in season by D1 coaches.

Not that I could care either way, just pointing out the obvious ;)

No, I agree. I just question whether you could call that "recruiting". I'm not sure Terry has to tell them that.

That's recruiting to me but to each his own. I wouldn't call his son a recruit, who doesn't want to play for their dad. I'm not throwing shots at Terry or those kids. Anybody from Oklahoma I want to succeed I love my state.

I hear you. Sorry if I come off as defensive, but it gets old hearing that none of the kids are homegrown when it's not true. The kids that have moved in probably do more to influence move ins just by clearing up the misconceptions that the suburbs have a prejudice vibe to them. Those kids that have moved in truly seem to enjoy going to school out here. They go to their AAU practice and tell their buddies how welcoming the kids are and that has an effect on them.

Please move this thread to the smack board. That is all it has become.

I'm going to close it completely if this back and forth, nitpicky crap doesn't stop. How many posts does it take to settle your differences with someone?

Maybe we can do it in the ring. Anybody got some boxing gloves I can borrow? :ez-laugh:

Ada, I apologize for my part in this. I should have just cleared up the facts and left it alone. For that, I'm truly sorry.

In today's world, any player can be seen...they don't need to play for a high profile HS team. If a family or player falls for that line, they are misinformed.

The only time a college coach is going to make an effort to attend a HS game is if they are really trying to drive the point home they want a kid. The initial film breakdown is done in the office off one of the numerous online services. From most of the college coaches I talk to, they would prefer not to travel period...especially during the season when their own games/opponent scouting is more important.

No big deal Section. I'm not the least bit upset with you or anyone else. I just thought it was time (past time really) to settle this and move on. I'm sure you and CoachTalk will agree that we have a lot more important things to talk about. :)

Generally comes down to jealous parents and coaches.
Kids switch high schools all the time for academic reasons...music, math, science, etc., without and ramifications. There should be no difference between that and athletics, given the family moves into the defined district. If a kid is in good academic standing...why does it matter?

Sometimes there is a better opportunity somewhere else...there is nothing wrong with pursuing it. You wouldn't trade jobs if something better came along?

I'm not a parent or a coach. Why don't I like it?

People moving their kids from one school to another only for basketball just rubs me the wrong way for several reasons. To say most of these kids moved as freshmen...OK fine, but 8 out of your top ten players are move-ins. It's clearly not just a coincidence. They were brought there in an attempt to build a stacked team. Any claim otherwise is not serious. The kids who would otherwise have gotten to play on that team now either have to give up hoops or convince their parents to move. It's silly.

To me, this is why you have AAU leagues. So kids don't have to switch schools to get noticed. Play against the best in the offseason in AAU, and represent your school during school season. Stacking school teams with transfers is just dirty pool played by greedy coaches and parents.

Just my opinion. Everybody is welcome to their own. I just feel like it's gotten a little out of hand.
