Yesterday we had little to no problem taking our time and dribbling up to pressure areas and passing over it. OU showed little care that they were even being pressured.

Question: Do you think that is a something Lon stressed this week or is it something the team actually bought in this time and done it his way? Seems we have kinda welcomed that pressure in the past to get us a quick shot from three or an open look under basket. Maybe it had more to do with being at WVU and not at home.

I focus on the negatives more because of always wanting to be better but I thought we competed very hard yesterday. Lattin was probably the difference in the game to me and when he got real active we pulled ahead.

It seemed to me our guys did a much better job of both not bunching up and making them choose to either press the ball or play the pass and the safety player was generally the to help out quick when they got in trouble. It is easier to be calm when you are prepared and have seen it once and your teammates are in the flow of things with you.

We handled the full court press well the first game too. We had more turnovers but they were mostly in the half court.

Of coursed it stressed by Lon all week. If you dont, then you probably arent winning on the road vs #10 WVU.

Another thing coaches stress is making teams pay for pressing you by shooting layups and piling up fouls against them. We did a good job of that.

There is no magic formula for breaking the press. The team, and the guys, all know how to break it. Actually doing it during the game isn't always that easy.

It seemed to me we tried to get the ball in bounds and up the court quicker yesterday, and that seemed to help. One pass and go, at times.

The magic formula, I would say, is limiting their scoring lol. They definitely did that. 62 points? On the road? I'll take that defense every game

Exactly. Limiting makes and taking the ball out of the net quickly limits their ability to get the press set properly. Having skilled, experienced guard play and a confident passer at a big position to provide a pressure release are also extremely important. Being coached up, tough minded, and prepared for what they are facing are obviously the biggest factors.

We had a real bad game handling the press at their place when Buddy and Isaih were freshmen. Have handled it well since. I think they do prepare by having more than five on defense in practice when working on beating the press.

Before the game in Norman, Lon told me they went 5 on 7 to work on breaking the press

funny, guess I'm getting old...

I thought we were actually very methodical in getting the ball back in. I didn't see a lot of urgency in that regard.

It can be seen both ways. It also gives the off time to "see" everything. I think wv is best when they scramble and make you scramble.

They were pressing a bit on TO's and missed shots which good teams will make you pay for that.

This is exactly how I saw it. Very slow and with purpose. I saw it quite differently at home with WVU. It seemed like we pushed it up the court and typically tried to outrun down the sidlelines. What most people dont get is that the press is not necessarily to turn you over but to get you to make bad decisions and take bad shots. Also, to make you wear out quicker. We play about 7 players and pressing teams usually play 9 or 10. So there's that.

lol, I just wrote on another thread that last night we were too slow...lol

That's what is good about wv...their press is crazy. Huggins said he adjusted just a few things from the first 2 meetings. I would love to know what they were. They seemed to be playing 4 (OU) on 3 (WV) after the first trap but we still made bad decisions.

The one thing I THINK they did, was do a 2nd double trap...we couldn't get the ball out of the back-court several times.

My biggest complaint is that we were so slow to adjust to their changes.

No guard behind the ball at all times and no player coming to the ball when their player doubled... these are high school concepts....

We didn't attack either. We were way too passive. You have to attack the pressure and force the issue. If we had attacked, more fouls are called and less turnovers which equals a win and probably by 10 or more points.

We were also slow to adjust to the way the game was being called. Anyone who didn't see that coming has not paid attention to the way games are being officiated in the post season tournaments. It's like someone hit the "play on" switch that all but eliminated some of the calls we have seen the entire season. And, it's not just in the Big 12 tournament. The change has been obvious in every tourney game I have seen so far.

Players and fans alike had better get used to it, 'cause we'll see more of the same in the NCAA tourney.
