Question on press breaks

The vast majority of the time, I'm perfectly fine with the play-on approach. I prefer it. But when it's part of a team's approach to the game to foul so much they overwhelm the officials into swallowing their whistles, that's tough to take.

Mostly, what one hopes for is consistency. Calling a block on Spangler but not on James' late drive is not a matter of "play on." It's bad officiating.

We were also slow to adjust to the way the game was being called. Anyone who didn't see that coming has not paid attention to the way games are being officiated in the post season tournaments. It's like someone hit the "play on" switch that all but eliminated some of the calls we have seen the entire season. And, it's not just in the Big 12 tournament. The change has been obvious in every tourney game I have seen so far.

Players and fans alike had better get used to it, 'cause we'll see more of the same in the NCAA tourney.

The first half was ridiculously inconsistent. WV didn't get a single foul until the 8 minute mark. Then in less than 2 minutes they had 6 fouls. I think they ended the half with us in the 2 shot bonus. How did they go the entire first 12 minutes without a single foul but then incur more than 10 over the next 8 minutes?

The 2nd half was just the opposite. The last 5 minutes the refs swallowed the whistle but the first 15 WV was getting fouls in bunches.

It's very difficult to beat a top10 team three times in a row.Kansas split with them. They can make any team look bad against that press. We won't face anything like that in the Tourney I less somehow we meet them again. Interesting to see how the Conference teams do in the Tourney. I look for WV to get a No 2 seed along with OU. Kansas overall No 1.

I just about guarantee we (Big 12) underachieve. Just feels like the conference has put together a resume that is better than the actual teams are. JMO.

Ask any coach what he expects from an officiating crew and the answer will almost always be, "consistency." I agree that last night's officials failed to deliver on that count.

That didn't change the fact that OU was slow to adjust to the way the game was being called. WVU came out aggressive on defense from the opening tap and OU didn't respond in kind The result was 21 turnovers, the most by far all season.

That might be expected from an inexperienced team that had not faced WVU's full court press before. But, this is a veteran team with three senior starters who were effective in breaking the Mountaineer's press twice during the regular season, the last in Morgantown.

There is no doubt the way the game was being called favored WVU. The point I was trying to make in my initial post is the officiating in last night's game was a change in the way the games had been called all season.

Lon needs to condition our players to match or exceed the physicality of future opponents, because IMHO last night's game was not an anomaly. It's the new trend in officiating now that the regular season is over.
