Mizzou, OU, Tech and A&M all hired new coaches. Rank the hires in terms of how effective you think the four will be at their perspective schools. Kennedy is the biggest wildcard imo.

Mine

1. Kruger - OU - Winner wherever he has gone. Has a great history of turning around programs. Known in the business as a guy who runs a clean ship and works hard to market the program to the local community (two things this program desperately needs at this juncture)

2. BCG - Tech - History of turning around unheralded Texas schools. Great recruiting ties in the region. Hired at a bargain price. Obvious questions regarding recent past and last stop at UK.

3. Kennedy - A&M - Experience with the university and recruiting ties to the area. Lots of unkowns but a decent get considering the circumstances.

4. Haith - Mizzou - Proven to be a salty recruiter. Questionable win/loss record at last job site. Lots of unknowns in terms of coaching ability at this level imo.

What do you think?

This is hard to do. I'd just say that Kruger and BCG are in one group and Kennedy/Haith are in another. I won't try to rank them beyond that.

1.) Billy Gillispie
-Turned around two programs in Texas, and will make Tech a 3rd. Should be at Tech for a long time. He will show them loyalty for giving him a 2nd chance. Kinda like Eddie Sutton and OSU.

2.) Lon Kruger
-Winner everywhere he has been. Great coach, great staff, does things the right way, etc.

3.) Frank Haith
-You could argue that Haith is the best coach Miami has ever had. Its a dump basketball program and he should not have gone there in the first place.

4.) Bill Kennedy
-No idea.

Ranking these coaches on the only things that matter:

1. Who has made the most money in their career.
2. Who has had the most recent success.
3. Who has had the highest level of success in their career.

Lon Kruger is head and shoulders above rest. His peak has been highest, more recent and he's made the bank to prove it.

1. Who has made the most money in their career.

That only proves who has been coaching the longest. Tom Penders has made more money than BCG, but that doesnt make him a better coach.

2. Who has had the most recent success.

Hmmm... Jeff Capel had some "recent" success thanks to a great player, but it didnt prove anything about his coaching ability.

3. Who has had the highest level of success in their career.

Agreed.

I would say,

1.) Who has had the most success in their career.
2.) Who is a great fit for a particular institution.
-Example, I think Gillispie is a great fit for Tech and A&M but wasnt a great fit for Kentucky, Duke, North Carolina, etc.
3.) Who does things the right way.

Curious, but how come you have BCG ranked ahead of Kruger? Don't want to denigrate BCG, but IMO I think Kruger is the better choice. He has more resources to work with, better track record as a coach, and has no off-court issues. Neither school can go wrong with their guy, though.

I think Tech hiring a coach like BCG is more impressive than OU hiring a guy like Kruger... BCG was at the top, possibly the biggest name in coaching coming out of A&M.

Kruger is great, but its not like OU lured him away from Duke or something. He was at a mid-level Mountain West school.

Tech did a great job and got lucky to land a guy like BCG, while OU is expected to land a good coach like Kruger.

I don't think Tech did a "great job" in hiring BCG at all. BCG has a ton of baggage and is coming off of a coaching failure in which he couldn't handle the pressure of coaching at that level. Tech took a risk (just like they did with Knight). I do agree that it was a smart move on their part, but let's not act like they had to work hard or out manuver anyone to get the guy.

Niether school could go wrong? BG is a drunk and he will do it again. Just like Eddie.

More impressive than when they hired Bob Knight?

Bold? Yes. Impressive? Meh...

There is a reason nobody else had hired BCG yet. It's not like he had alot of options to choose from, and it certainly wasn't a bidding war. He went there because they are one of the very few big-conference schools that would have him at this time. It will likely pay off for them, just like it did with Knight, and like oSu with Sutton, or KSU with Huggins. But that alone doesn't make it an impressive accomplishment for them to hire him. If a real basketball school wanted him, he wouldn't be in Lubbock.

So, because Eddie Sutton went back to the bottle it means Billy Gillispie will too?

Can anyone name this logical fallacy?

Probably, but that isnt relevant.

-Billy Gillispie is a big time coach.
-Texas Tech is not a big time basketball school.
-Therefore, Texas Tech got a coach who is better than the program he now works for.

For OU:

-Lon Kruger is a big time coach.
-OU is a big time basketball program.
-Therefore, OU made an appropriate hire. It wasnt a bombshell hire. It wasnt a shock that a guy like Kruger left a mid-level Mountain West school to come here, etc etc.

At the end of the day, all that matters is that a historically average (at best) basketball school hired a top level coach, which puts them at the top of this particular list.

Sure, that is easy. The best and most accurate predicter of human behavior is past behavior.

Tech just took another risk because they are the worst program in the Big XII. Nothing impressive about taking a guy everybody else passed on. Whether it's Bobby Knight or BCG.

"Since Gillispie (who would have been a great hire) is already announced to Tech and after 10 full days we have not hear a peep about anything."
-bocabull

"I can really see Gillispie having an Eddie Sutton type of career at Tech though."
-bocabull

"Hire Gillispie. He's by far the best coach OU could possibly land. Have a driver follow him around to give him a lift after nights out drinking and there should be no problem."
-bocabull

So he is the best coach OU could possibly land but now he isnt the best hire in the Big 12? You also think he could turn Tech into a regular top 25 team and NCAA Tournament team and have the court named after him down there, but now he isnt the best hire in the Big 12? He would have been a great hire for OU, but now he is a guy that nobody wanted?

That's how he ended up at Tech (because nobody wanted him). He did all he could to pimp himself to be the next coach here (even told an espn radio show that he was going to be the next coach here). Boren said no. So did several other schools that were in the hiring process.

Right, but none of that means he IS NOT the best new coach in the Big 12. This thread is about the best new coach in the Big 12. Its not about who is the coolest guy, who has the cleanest record, who makes the most money, etc. Its about who the best new coach in the league is.

The old search button can come back to bite you for sure.

Abd of all people knows that all too well. I try not to use it that much on people personally because we all have made claims, predictions, and knee jerk reactions on here that turn out to look foolish in the future.

There was a time that I thought Capel was the second best coach in the conference! :(
