Not at all. It was clearly a time for a change for both parties...similar to Billy and Kelvin leaving OU. I think OU and Texas have very similar basketball programs and their coaches experience the same ultimate outcome. You can be very successful at both schools, but you can only sustain a high level of success for so many years. Billy said this many years ago and Kelvin concurred shortly after he left. When was the last time a men's basketball head coach at OU or Texas left on a "relatively" high note? I believe the answer is NEVER.
He also left as we were going on probation partly because of that recruiting class. Let's break it down this way.
Billy:
NCAA tournament wins first 4 years: 1
NCAA tournament wins next 6 years: 14
NCAA tournament wins last 4 years: 0
Kelvin:
NCAA tournament wins first 4 years: 0
NCAA tournament wins next 5 years: 10
NCAA tournament wins last 3 years: 1
I bet if you look break this down for Rick Barnes at Texas you will get a similar outcome...same for Abe Lemons; same for Bruce Drake. Again, please show me a coach who had a different pattern. Tom Penders won games right out of the gate, but still left on a relative low note.
