Shake to smu

SMU is a more attractive option than OU now. The AAC is a basketball first conference, SMU has some swag in Dallas & their environment is way more exciting since Brown arrived and they upgraded the facility. It's like the difference between playing for the Knicks or the Kings in the NBA.

Good luck to the kid.

For Real? SMU in the AAC is more attractive than OU in the Big 12?

And it'll sound silly for me to voice doubts, I suppose, given I live nowhere near Dallas, but I don't buy for a second that SMU was the hot ticket in town last season. The DFW Metroplex is a huge area, with tons of entertainment options, including NFL, NBA, NHL and MLB franchises.

It's not as thought SMU went to the Final Four last season; they didn't even go the NCAA tourney. They went 27-10, but five of those wins were in the NIT. They lost their last two regular-season games and in the first round of the conference tourney.

It was by no measure a magical season. A good season, sure, but capturing the imagination of the entire metroplex? That just doesn't ring true to me.

campbest, myself & others who understand Dallas in general and the Park Cities in particular have already explained this in the past. Unless your a diehard Sooner pretty much anybody would choose SMU over OU in hoops right now.

Lol. OU had about double the attendance of SMU basketball last season. SMU landed one spot below Siena in average attendance for D-1 programs.

As someone in the Park Cities, yes, there was enthusiasm around the SMU basketball program last season that hadn't been seen, probably ever. But did the community as a whole rally around and adopt the team? No. They were still 4th or 5th in the local sports news pecking order. But they got some coverage, and sold out their stadium (that's half the size of LNC) a few times. Two things they never had before.

OU had double the amount of ticket sales but people actually in seats is probably about even.

SMU plays a good schedule. Obviously their AAC champ, UConn, were the NCAA champs last year, and teams like Memphis, Cincy, etc. are pretty good. I personally think the Big 12 is tougher top to bottom than the AAC but that can be argued.

I look at the AAC as kind of a "picked over" Big East. Regardless, I wish Shake good luck and am ready to move on from him. He will get to play a home game at Tulsa every year..... so his family will get to watch him.

Their ticket sales average was only 5,000. Our butts in seats average was higher than that by virtue of the "big" games having 10-12,000. Although a few of our early games were certainly in the 3,000 butts in seat range.

This is crazy and it is one of the biggest problems with the Big 12 fans. We simply do not know our own basketball history. KU, Texas, OU, KSU, OSU and WVU have all been to the NCAA Tournament 25 times or more. The teams in our conference have been to the NCAA tournament way more times than the teams in the AAC. Several teams in the AAC have been 10 times or fewer. Only Baylor and TCU have been less than 10 times. The AAC team that went 10 times is SMU and the vast majority of those were a long time ago. Baylor has made some nice runs in the last few years. So Baylor is currently a way stronger program than SMU.

The top teams in the AAC in terms of NCAA appearances are UConn, (31) Temple (31), Memphis (26), Houston (19) and Tulsa (15). the top teams in the Big 12 are KU (43), Texas (31), OU (28), KSU (28), OSU (26), WVU (25). The bottom of the conference favors the Big 12 even more than the top. ISU has been 16 times, Tech has been 13 times, etc. So Tech is pushing Tulsa and they rank 8th in the conference in terms of NCAA Tournament appearances.

In my opinion it isn't even close. UCF, South Florida, East Carolina, Tulane and SMU have virtually no history and are not good now. It frustrates me to see Big 12 fans sell our conference short in basketball.

Boca, you can't possibly be serious! Do you say that because SMU went to the finals of the NIT last year?

SMU hasn't been in the NCAA tourney since 1993, when they lost in the first round to BYU. They had a nice run in the 50s and 60s, but the Ponies have been absolutely awful since then. Four NCAA tourney appearances in the last 47 years pales in comparison to what OU has accomplished. I repeat, 47 years, as in no appearances in the Big Dance in nearly a half century.

I'll concede one thing. Larry Brown is doing a nice job as the Mustang's head coach. He took the program from an abysmal 15-17 record his first year to a very respectable 27-10 record last year and a trip to the NIT. But to suggest that "anybody would choose SMU over OU in hoops right now" is laughable. Shake Milton chose the Mustangs, but it certainly wasn't due to their rich tradition in basketball.

Yeah Boca you need to layoff the drugs. Drugs are bad mkay.

How many NBA players has smu produced, how many tourney wins, don't even know where in Dallas they are and I've been to dallas at least twice a year for 20 years. Can't be that great of a school...especially for my last reason.
