Needing a win in the worst possible way, the Oklahoma women brought eight victories and only eight players into Kansas State’s Bramlage Coliseum Wednesday night.
Despite not leading for even a second through three quarters, the Sooners walked out with the same eight players as well as their ninth victory, stopping the Wildcats 76-71.
OU enjoyed one of its best shooting games of the season, canning 56.6 percent (30 of 53) of its attempts and half (7 of 14) of its 3-point attempts.
Still, turnovers — 16 in the first half — looked like they would be the Sooners’ undoing.
It also didn’t help to be playing without freshman guard Ana Llanusa, who led OU with 19 points in its previous outing against Baylor, yet whose availability is day-to-day as she endures concussion protocol.
OU more than halved its giveaways in the second half, committing seven, yet still trailed 53-51 entering the fourth quarter.
A natural three-point play from senior center Vionise Pierre-Louis put the Sooners on top for the first time, 54-53 11 seconds into the final frame, but Kansas State came back with a 7-2 run to lead by four points.
OU did not trail again after running off the next nine points, punctuated by one of senior guard Gabbi Ortiz’s six 3-pointers.
Kansas State tied the game for the last time, 6666, with 4:02 remaining, yet OU responded with a 7-2 run that built the lead back to five points inside the final minute.
The victory moved the Sooners to 9-9 overall and 4-3 in the Big 12 Conference. The Wildcats fell to 11-7 and 3-4.
OU was led by Oritz’s 20 points on 7 of 13 shooting and 6 of 11 3-point proficiency.
Pierre-Louis added 18 points on 7 of 8 shooting as well as a co-team high, along with Maddie Manning, seven rebounds and a career-high six assists.
Pressed into starting in Llanusa’s absence, freshman guard Shaina Pellington played the entire 40 minutes, seven more than her previous high. Since conference play began, she had played as few as 15 and as many as 33. She responded Wednesday with 16 points and six assists.
Forward Peyton Williams led the Wildcats with 23 points and eight rebounds.
Next up for OU is the regular-season’s final Bedlam contest. Oklahoma State visits Lloyd Noble Center at noon Saturday.
The 24th-ranked Cowgirls beat the Sooners Jan. 7 in Stillwater.
