NORMAN – In its final tuneup before the 2018-19 regular season, the Oklahoma women's basketball team rolled to a 119-45 exhibition victory over Northeastern State on Monday night inside Lloyd Noble Center.
The Sooners' 119 points were their most in an exhibition since scoring 132 against Western State in 2008. Sophomore guard Shaina Pellington led the way with 33 points on 12-of-18 shooting and added in a team-high six assists, while freshman Taylor Robertson sunk seven three-pointers and finished with 21 points.
Sophomore guard Ana Llanusa added in 17 points and finished 3-for-5 from deep. Freshman guard Tatum Veitenheimer finished with nine points, nine rebounds and five assists.
“I thought we played really hard. I think what the fans got to see tonight is a taste of what this team will do," OU head coach Sherri Coale said. "We have to play with a rather high risk-reward system because we’re not big, and everybody has bought into that as you can tell tonight. This group has a nice feel about them. They like each other. They play well together. They’re learning, and they’re willing to learn and willing to listen. It’s fun. It’s fun to coach them, and we shot it super well tonight."
Twelve OU players saw time in the exhibition contest, all scoring at least one point on the night.
OU finished with a .573 shooting percentage (43-of-75) and knocked down 17 3-pointers in the victory. The 17 3-point field goals would have matched a single-game record for the Sooners. OU also recorded 29 assists as five different Sooners recorded at least five assists in the win.
“It definitely was a confidence booster for everyone on the team because we were all taking and making good shots. Hopefully that will keep going into the next game," Robertson said after the win.
The Sooners' pressure defense forced 34 Riverhawk turnovers as OU scored 53 points off of Northeastern State turnovers. The Riverhawks finished with a .286 field goal percentage and OU limited Northeastern State to under nine points in each of the final three quarters.
OU finished with a 43-31 advantage in rebounding and dominated in the post, scoring 50 points in the paint. The Sooners' up-tempo offense also recorded 18 fast break points.
