TCU at OU - Comments Thread

Final
Iowa State 48
Oklahoma State 60

OU is four games up on Iowa State, TCU, Oklahoma State---all at 6-7.
If they were to win, K-State and WV could also be 6-7.

And we are closer to 1st place than 3rd place.

It is highly likely we end up with the #2 seed in the Big-12 tournament, and if we can win our first two games (not a given), face Baylor in the Championship game.

Why is it highly unlikely that we end up with the #2 seed?

I'm irritated. Sooner website said we moved to 16-9 with our outstanding win today, but we are clearly 16-8.

Somebody in the publications department needs a new job.

I think you misread my post.

I said highly Likely, not highly unlikely.

We are pretty close to a guarantee of 2nd place - or better.

I'm pretty sure she gets it, but is a little bit embarrassed about her misread. Don't judge her harshly, she's a good person.

You're right. It wasn't even that late when i read it, so that's no excuse. :facepalm

Mom,

I wasn't really correcting you - just making sure I didn't get grouped up with some of our famous "OU Haters".

This post is aimed at teasing them - not you.

One of the best defensive games we have played all season. In spite of going almost five minutes in the second half with out a point, it was nice to see that we still were able to hold a strong double digit lead. Sharane was outstanding on Hamilton and I don't know if she was hurt or not but she only logged 17 minutes. Our kids played with a purpose and passion on the court. Proud of how they came back from a defeat at Waco. Peyton is really playing at a high level right now. Gioya slowly getting back in the groove and hopefully will regain her consistency soon. Nice job at fighting for 50/50's. We have a really good chance at finishing at 20-9 or 21-8. Its time for the girls to bring it every game from here on and get ready for tournament time. I like what I see shaping up.

I think that Raegan Pebley found some energy on the bench, and she played it. I don't think she was happy with the energy of the team in the first half. She usually plays six people. She brought in Butts, Ndao, and Alix, and they got a lot of minutes.

I thought that Kay Kay had a good game. She was good in the earlier game with TCU. They really have difficulty with bigs. Peyton was Peyton, and that is better than I thought it would be this year. She is getting that shooting touch that I hadn't seen in college. This was a game in which we got meaningful performances out of several: Kornet, T'Ona, and Maddie off the bench, as well as Vivi.

After 3 or 4 turnovers in the first five possessions, we played great the first half and a little more than half of the second half.

I thought the defensive intensity and the on-man defense was probably the best I've ever seen out of OU -- period. I couldn't believe how good they were defensively.

At one point we had them down 21 rebounds to 7. I mean come on! Yes, they have trouble with bigs, but three times their number? That's some good rebounding.

The start of the second half was disappointing. I think most of our 19 turnovers occurred in the first 7 minutes of the second half. You can't do that. Intensity is hard to maintain in that kind of game, but they just have to find a way to do it.

I was a little disappointed in Maddie's turnovers, most of which were just silly passes and unforced errors.

However, I thought the entire team played well. Sharane is just trying to play too quick, IMO. She needs to take a deep breath. She's making too many turnovers and I believe she only played 17 minutes because of that.

I'll tell you probably the best thing I liked about this game was Sherri's substitution pattern; how she set Sharane and Goiya down; how she almost platoon subbed in the first half. It was one of her best in-game coaching decisions I've seen her do.

It's going to be a gang fight the remainder of the season boys and girls. I think we have it in us to finish strong, if we just will. I've predicted 3-3. We can do better than that.

I really like this team, although they are just like one of your children. Sometimes they just need a good yelling at, or a slap.

I know it's hard to win on the road in the Big XII. Iowa State can't handle our bigs, but we have to guard the 3 as well if not better than our first time at home. We play defense like Saturday, we win a close game. K State is no where in our class, but they always play us tough in their house. We just need to play at our level and not theirs and all will take care of it self. I just don't think OSU can hang with us, but we are playing bedlam and any thing can happen. We should take care of Kansas at home and then of course we still have the bears in a couple of weeks or so. Just hope we give ourselves a chance and play a whole 40 minutes. I still think we finish no worse than 3-2 but sure would like to see 4-1 going into post season play.

According to the stat sheet, Maddie had one turnover? Since I think there were other things wrong, I'm going to look at the tape again. It isn't jiving with the flow chart on Soonersports.com.

I think we'll slip up somewhere. But, I think we have at least a forty percent chance against Baylor, and a two-thirds chance against K-State, OSU, and Iowa State on the road. We may lose one. For some reason, Gardner just doesn't seem to do that well against us, and we are OK if we can keep Knight in check. Don't know why that is. But, it means we are a high probability to beat KU.

They may have labeled one a steal for TCU. There was the turnover at the top of the key in a double team and one in the lane and possibly 1 on the end line. But I'd have to re watch the game to be sure.

OK. I rewatched the game twice and took notes---specifically regarding Maddie.

15:37 Missed layup, OU retained possession and Peyton scored
15:10 Maddie tipped a rebound to Gabbi, Gabbi credited with Rebound
14:20 Jumps up to catch a Breaux pass just as it left her hands, dribbled it down to the other end, gave it to LaNesia who almost lost it. Kay Kay scored a layup at 14:12. The play by play doesn't mention a stolen pass or anything. It just says Kay Kay scored.

12:08 Layup Maddie
10:17 Almost gets it from Breaux, kicked ball

10: 07 Dives on the floor to steal the ball from Veja Hamilton, Passes it to T'Ona who drives down for a layup. The play by play doesn't credit Maddie as having been there. It just says turnover Hamilton.

4:25 Blocks shot or tips pass (not sure whether it was a shot attempt or pass, looked like a three-point shot) by Ventress on left sideline. Ball careens off Ventress out of bounds. Kay Kay makes layup. All the play by play says is that Ventress turned it over. No mention of Maddie.

0:11 Blocked shot by Prince, got rebound, T'Ona tried a three at the buzzer and missed. Play by play actually mentioned Maddie.

SECOND HALF

15:13 Turnover Maddie, bad pass out front, tried cross court

14:06 Defensive rebound Maddie

13:48 Saved pass, made assist as she was stretching to reach the ball, passing it to Peyton who hit a three. I think it was Kay Kay who threw a bad pass to Maddie. The irony, the play by play credits Kay Kay with the assist.

12:51 Steals pass, actually it was tipped to Maddie by Peyton or Gabbi, but Maddie got credit for the steal.
12:27 Maddie misses layup, Kay Kay rebounded.
8:27 Maddie offensive rebound off Kornet missed three
8:20 Maddie missed a three
8:17 FOUL Maddie as she tried to rebound her missed shot.

7:34 Tipped a pass by Breaux, Gabbi got it and got the credit for the steal, just the reverse of what happened at 12:51 Peyton missed layup--I mention this because I think it was the only steal involving Maddie that didn't result in a score. Incidentally, the play by play doesn't mention Maddie on this play.

6:35 Assist on a Peyton three

3:44 Ortiz hits a baseline jumper on an assist by Maddie

2:47 Maddie hits layup and a free throw on an assist by Derica. The play by play actually says that Sharane lost it on a turnover without mentioning that she got it back from Prince to feed Derica who fed Maddie. This time, they shafted Sharane.
6:22 Defensive rebound (it was credited to Peyton by the play by play)

You will notice that I highlighted plays that Maddie did that were not mentioned in the play by play. I knew the stats weren't picking up some things.

What I noticed more clearly in the replay was that Kay Kay had a better game than I had thought. She wasn't getting the passes to set her up. She was getting her points off of offensive boards, which is how I like it. She must have had six putbacks. That is what I want to see out of Kay Kay.

I also noticed that Maddie was able to bounce the ball to both Kay Kay and Vivi. Yet, I don't think they ever scored from it. But, they caught it every time. The bounce was getting to them at least thigh high. They catch it and want to dribble rather than go straight up. Then, they lose it.

There was a play in second half where (I thought Maddie) was just to the right of the top of the key and she tried a bounce pass or low pass to Ortiz or Peyton slightly on the wing. Ortiz was double teamed and TCU got the steal and it was just a horrible decision. This was in that early second half of turnovers.

I also could have sworn she turned it over on a bad pass between the basket and the foul line.

You watched a replay or looking at the play-by-play sheet, Syb?

I watched the replay (twice) and wrote down the plays that involved Maddie (unless all she did was catch and throw or something). I did not write down the four or five times that she saved someone from a turnover by having very long arms that were able to get to the passes that they flubbed. One of those did end up as an assist, but they gave it to Kay Kay. After I wrote down what actions involved anything like a score or change of possession (or a potential error), I checked the play by play. Mine is accurate, made with time to check each play. I think they made theirs in the flow of the game. I think I got Maddie with a rebound, an assist, and two steals that they didn't get. In addition, there was one blocked shot or stolen pass that they didn't get. What was curious was that so many of these led directly to scores, and the stat sheet didn't mention them.

I guess my eyes at the game played tricks on me.

I think the pass you are referring to may have been either Derica or Nicole. I'll have to go back and look, but if it was the one that they stood and stared at, that was Nicole. Then, I think it was Prince that out-raced them to the basket. Maddie only made one pass inside the free throw line, to Gabbi on the baseline. Gabbi hit a jump shot. There was only the one turnover as Maddie passed it from the wing to the top of the key with a TCU player intercepting.

There was another turnover that was kind of on a pass that involved Maddie. Maddie tossed a pass into a wide open Kay Kay, hitting her on the hands. Kay Kay took her eyes off the ball, and it bounced off her hands. They credited it to Kay Kay. It was a simple toss of about eight to ten feet with nobody in between. Couldn't possibly miss it. But, Kay Kay did.

It seems to me that they kept Peyton, Gabbi, and Maddie in together a lot during this game. They rotated Vivi and Kay Kay a lot. They brought Nicole, Sharane, and Gioya in as well. But, they seemed to keep Peyton, Gabbi, and Maddie together. No turnovers, or very few, when they were in the game together.

In regard to statistical records both at the team, university and NCAA level, I thought all turnovers where laid on the person who was first controlling the ball when the action/turnover occurred. So the Kay-Kay turnover should have been Maddie's.

On the one I mention first, I thought it was Ortiz or Nicole that she was passing to.

Is there a place I can watch the game replay because I inadvertently deleted it off my DVR.
