The beginning of the end?

i think it would get fixed....by winning. the last couple of years.....the crowds grew with a couple of wins...
then a devastating loss at home killed all the momentum.
fans are in a "show me" mode.....and pm showed them wednesday night.

Respectfully disagree. This team has been winning this year. This was the biggest game of the year so far and we only had 1 loss to date - ranked inside the top 20.

OU fans are not all that interested in college basketball, in my opinion.

And now we have two losses - inside the top 10. And watch our next home crowd. It will be BAD.

I want to ask an interesting question: Was there a specific moment, or game, in your opinion that signaled the beginning of the end of the Porter Moser (PM) era?
To me, the beginning of the end was when we lost in the first round of the Big12 tournament last season. We were seen as a lock to make March Madness coming into that week, and left with about a 50% chance. There were rumors swirling that we sat key players to rest for the big dance, rather than play them against TCU. Whether those were true or not, it just felt odd.

To me, that was the beginning of the end.

I’m a bit different in that, although NIL is very important and real, there are several things that I can see also play into the mind of a recruit, especially portal guys.

1. The coach- his style, demeanor on and off the court. Kids nowadays (maybe due to nil) don’t think they need to be yelled at.. or disciplined. Don’t know off court, but not overly impressed with his on court demeanor. Bill self will chew ass… in the huddle, not throw his arms up and yell into his hand.

2. The coach’s winning history, can he get me to the final four/NC. Also getting guys into the pros etc. Even though most of us understand the odds of these kids ever playing pro ball, they don’t. Moser struck gold 1 time… his overall is barley over .500.

3. Game atmosphere - is the place rocking or a morgue. Who wants to play in front of no crowd? No one. Winning brings fans… I’ll give porter a thumbs up for trying to get the students involved but winning gets the non students in.

So, ya NIL might be big, but I don’t see guys going to **** schools because of NIL (I know they can’t afford them anyways) but if the other things aren’t there $ won’t persuade them.

Just my two cents, but the top 2 are on moser… not NIL.

I wish PM could cook in the conference tourneys like he does in the in season tourneys

The problem is OU fans keep giving the team chances showing up for big games and time after time Moser steps on his crank. Without fail. At some point they will say screw it. They may have already. OK let's go to the frat houses and sororities again, yippee! Win some big home conference games and beat your rivals brother.. You will be AMAZED at the wonders that would work.... Rocket science, I say!

The problem is the fans/donors. They don’t show up for games. They don’t pay for a new arena. They don’t pay competitively for NiL. They are getting exactly what they are paying for.

Look at softball. OU fans, admin, everyone is ravenous over OU softball. Epic proportions. Do you really think if Natty Patty hadn't done all this winning that anyone in Oklahoma would give two *s about softball? Right. I have all these OU fan friends that are softball experts now HA. But college basketball is huge. If OU got someone in here who could win half like what Patty is doing.. I don't care if Lloyd Noble started to sell funeral plots that place would be packed. Softball has to turn people away. Do you really think, all things being equal, that softball is a bigger sport than basketball? Hell no. OU has spoiled, front running fans that demand being elite. Maybe not EVERY game, but I was a kid in the 80s and had ESPN. I saw from the TV what Lloyd Noble was like during those teams'(King,Blaylock,Grant, etc) runs. That place was so packed and loud it almost broke the glass in my house as a kid during big games. Confetti and * flying everywhere. Roy Williams chasing students HAHA. Of course they wouldn't sell out EVERY game. But they'd have 8 thousand instead of 3 in the lesser games.

The reason we are where we are with bball is we have a coach that doesn't know how to win or compete in this environment. The NIL stuff may be valid, but this March you will see probably about 40+ teams winning whose NIL is less than OUs.. Just win baby!

This 1000%. OU fans are fickle when it comes to basketball. OU basketball may never get the support it deserves. But it’s such a lazy argument to blame Moser’s struggles with the lack of fan support. The fans haven’t even had a chance with Moser. The team blows it every time they have a chance to build excitement. Two years ago it was losing to OSU. Last year it was the home loss to Texas. This year it was blowing an eighteen point lead against AM. We can all agree we wish OU basketball got more fan support for just existing. Like some other programs out there. But can we get a coach in here who can consistently win big games at home before we worry about the fan base?

Who would want to come back to the LNC after watching OU blow an eighteen point lead to AM?

I think many fans, myself included, are just kind of fed up with the disappointment of the football and men’s basketball teams. It’s just one disappointment after another year after year.

I don't post much. I didn't like the hire to begin with has his track record was failure and mediocrity for many years before 2 great years out of 3. Some of my friends thought it was an outstanding hire. I elected to wait and see. His failure to retain players from year to year when he stated that he wanted continuity and players to stay in the same system here their entire careers was a huge red flag to me. The program is not where it should be, and I will not comment on X & O's here. His tenure hasn't been all bad, just not good enough. He has made some notable changes and I am pulling for him to get it worked out and get us back in contention, and off the bubble.

This. Every sport at OU is held to the standard of the football program. National championship or bust. If the team isn't competing at a national level, they're not worth supporting. Football is still being supported, but how many 6-7 seasons will we endure before we lose our fanbase in football?

People love softball because Patty is a likable person and recruits players people like, but more importantly because OU dominates opponents and wins national championships. We wouldn't give a flying rat's behind about softball otherwise.

This is dumb. It’s not professional sports. There’s supposed to be loyalty to an alma mater.
