Tiny investigation update

Exactly... they are going to do everything to protect the head coach, because if he resigns or gets caught the University gets in big time trouble.

Not on this one. My understanding is that the compliance department was moved to be under the supervision of the president's office.

That said, you are now putting the University in a loose/loose deal...now they are all dishonest? And you got that off of a few tweets?

There is a difference between Capel being involved and Capel knowing. If Capel didn't know then he's clueless and had no control of his program. If he did know then he allowed cheating in his program. Either way Capel is a huge part of the problem.

The difference is if he wasn't directly involved they can't prove that he knew anything.

I don't think we can assume anything, until we have more evidence. Does it make more sense to assume that he did know?

Well actually, yes. Since Capel is the HC and head of the entire basketball program I think it would be foolish to believe he didn't. If he didn't then I would question his ability to control and lead the program if these things are being done behind his back.

?

To sum up, Capel should be fired if he knew and fired if he didn't know, but not fired because it will make the school look guilty? Is that correct?

I thought Coach "O" was a real coup for Capel to hire as an assistant but he appears to be extremely dirty, that's a shame.
I am very skeptical of ANY situation where a coach is hired in order to get a kid to sign. Often, my skepticism is proven to have merit.

I think that pretty much sums it up, brilliantly I might add.

I do not think Jeff should be fired. But this is just a horrible spot for him.

I think that most sane people would agree with that based on what we know to date. If it comes out that he did know or should have known, then I think his job SHOULD be on the line.

Not to be sarcastic but if as a coach you are going to do this WHY leave a trail on a school phone??? How do you get to be a D1 assistant coach with no more common sense than that. That is not to say I approve just scratching my head in disbelief.

And I though the University added a policy of overview on the phone deal after the Sampson deal.

OU already knows what people still in the program know and have Coach O's story as well. They are investigating whether O lied to them and there is more to the story. Joe knows Capel didn't have any involvement or he would have already been fired and he wouldn't have allowed Jeff to recruit 9 new kids in that would be free to leave if he fires Capel tomorrow.

In short, unless new information surfaces implicating Jeff, he is going to stick by him and just deal with whatever happened. You can bet Joe has talked with Jeff about his control of the program, and/or lack thereof. Further, he has considered all of the "captain of the ship" arguments regarding culpability of Jeff and has also decided that Jeff didn't have direct involvement. Otherwise, he would have fired him in time to get a new coach and a few recruits in the late signing period.

Anybody that thinks Joe hasn't gone this route thinks Joe is a fool (which he certainly isn't) and is kidding themselves.

I can't imagine a scenario where Capel did not know.

-Oronde was hired to recruit and/or bring Willie (and possibly Tiny).
-He was working extensively with a financial advisor who wired money into Tiny Gallons account, and has met with Willie privately.
-With 41 phone calls and 25 text messages between the OU coach and the financial advisor, it seems pretty clear that Oronde arranged the relationship.

Now, knowing that Oronde was hired to recruit specific players, how could the head coach not know the method he was using to recruit them? How could Capel be blind to 41 phone calls, 25 text messages, money transfers, illegal contact with agents, etc all from an assistant coach who was doing it FOR Jeff Capel?

The person who benefits MOST from bringing in big time talent like Tiny and Willie is Jeff Capel, not Oronde. Oronde get's no credit for winning and none of the blame for losing, why would he stick his neck out like that for another persons accomplishments? Oronde is the highest paid assistant coach as the 3rd assistant on staff, because he was hired to bring in the top talent.

There is just no way that Jeff Capel didn't know.

:clap

Everyone is forgetting that Joe C is one of the best AD's in the NCAA. We have one of the toughest compliance departments in the NCAA. there is no way Jeff is HC today if he knew or was involved.

So you think that Jeff is completely clueless? We shouldn't treat assistants doing something wrong as something different from what Jeff is doing because that's a representative of what Jeff wants since he hired him. Saying Jeff was clueless on this deal makes him look just as bad as if he knew full well what as going on and allowed it.

Was Capel spending 24/7 with Oronde?
Those calls and texts were spaced out over a long time period it is very possible they all could been done behind Capel's back.

Now the last part of your post I can agree with to some extent. But Oronde does benefit from being known as a top flight recruiter for a top 15 program which could lead to a head coaching job. Also perhaps he was so arrogant he thought he wouldn't get caught.

I think we have too little information at this point to say either way if Capel knew or did not know.

Exactly. The actions of Joe C. are the main reason I believe that Jeff did not know what Oronde was doing. If one believes that Joe would've canned Capel if he had knowledge of these actions, then there are only two explanations for his continued employment. 1.) Jeff lied to Joe. 2.) Jeff did not know. In my opinion, anyone implying that there is no way that Jeff did not know what was going on is calling Jeff a liar.

+1. All of the talk about Jeff knew or Jeff should have known is way off base if you ask me. The only way Jeff could have known is if someone involved in the scheme told Jeff or if somehow Jeff intercepted some messages between the guilty parties when the deal was going on. Both of those scenerios are highly doubtful.

I guess Jeff should've been receiving Oronde's and Tiny's personal cell phone records each month. Bank statements also would've been nice.

Your post assumes that the "he knew" crowd thinks/thought he didn't arrange it in the first place.

Jeff hired Oronde to bring in those players. He knew from the get-go, is what I am saying. He didn't need to stumble across the transfer documents, phone messages, or overhear Oronde in the bathroom on the cell phone, lol.

His staff got caught doing what Jeff hired him to do, in my opinion.

In the world of major collegiate athletics, I refuse to believe that a coach was hired to do a specific thing and the head coach has no idea how he was accomplishing it.

This is the scenario you are painting:

Jeff Capel: Ok, lets try to lock up Willie and Tiny.
Oronde: Will do, coach!
*hours go by*
Jeff Capel: How was the visit?
Oronde: They committed!
Jeff Capel: Really? What did you say to convince them?
Oronde: Oh, I just sold them on the education.
Jeff Capel: Sounds stupendous to me! High five!
Oronde: It's what I do.
Jeff Capel: Lets have a great season!
Oronde: Yes! BOOMER SOONER!

This is a bigger conspiracy theory than I imagined. :ez-laugh:
