Starters:

5-4 G Jr Erika Wakefield 12.89 pts, 3.44 assists
6-2 F Fr Kendrian Elliott 11.00 pts, 6.83 reb
5-6 G Soph Tatyana 10.22 pts
5-8 G Fr Alexis Gaulden 6.56 pts, 4.22 reb
6-1 F Jr Liesl Spoerl 5.22 pts, 2.22 reb
5-7 G Sr Ashley Hughes 3.56 pts, 2.67 reb

They only shoot 40.69% from the field, but they shoot 36.31 from three. They have shot 179 threes in nine games, about twenty per game. They shoot 72.17% from the line.

Their opponents outshoot them, 41.67%, but only 28.05% from three. They are outscored, 66.0 to 70.22. They have been badly outrebounded, 41.77 to 33.67. They have about 1 fewer turnovers per game than their opposition.

Oral Roberts beat them, but not by much.

Very nice start to the game. Good hustle and intensity. Liked the full court press.

Like that Mulkey is getting early minutes.

42-29 at the half. Some ill-advised one-on-one play at the end of the half. Good defense. I don't think Tulsa will be 7 of 11 from three in the second half. That's a bit too good.

No blocks for Mulkey. They wouldn't come inside when she was there. She was only 3 of 7 from the floor, a bit of a surprise. Missed layups.

Williams and Edwards with two fouls. Peyton with ten points.

How in the world does Vivi only have one shot attempt in the entire first half?

I'd also be very interested to hear Sherri speak about her strategy behind who starts each game. Has anyone asked her about that?

I wonder if Vivi is or has been sick. She didn't seem herself today. Gioya had strep throat a couple of weeks ago. It's very contagious and the incubation period is 10-14 days.

In the past few games, they have packed it inside, and Vivi and EJ have had difficulties with it. They are OK defensively. But, they are not getting the ball low enough, too high of a position. Being pushed away.

The best answer seems to be Nancy who can shoot over low, or Maddie, who can force them to pay attention. Chelsea is good at getting inside as well.

This is kind of what Maddie is capable of. She is the only thing limiting herself. I seem to remember a lot more times someone got a shot off due to Maddie---one assist?

Tulsa can shoot the three.

Strangely enough, I don't think we played as well today as we did in the second half against TEX RGV.

i think Maddie scored in every way possible today. Drive. Jumper. 3. transition. free throws. POST. Pick and Roll. ect. A player that can do it all, that is sustainable scoring. I believe Its finally happening. Very happy for her and us.

Now. Where do we go from here??

Im guessing Maddie takes Gioya's spot right now. How is Gioya going to handle that? She could be one of the most important players on the team still- a strong 6th man is so valuable. She could also still start whether that is next game or if she wins it bk. But, I definitely think her and Maddie should not play together as much as possible- Whatever the starters, they should stagger their minutes as much as they can. That will keep them from clashing skill sets, and also keep us strong throughout the game.

Vivi, they doubled quick. The rest of the players are coming on tho and they will force teams to stop doing that. She will be just fine. One of the best posts in the Big 12 by far.

I like, Mulkey and EJ too. they are becoming very good players- but a few youngster mistakes. They will learn.

Everyone else- not much has changed since my last post. Except Gabbi is really playing good basketball right now- would like to recognize that. I think we need TT to be compfortable w/ a ton of starter minutes because she can matches up better w/ some of the guards in our league. But Gabbi is playing well.

I would think the starting lineup stays the same, as improved play from Maddie came after coming off the bench. Close to the same for Gabbi. Give them both minutes on how they play, and if like today Maddie, Peyton, and Gabbi have the most minutes it is because they played aggressive, but under control. Let the game come to them for open shots or lanes to drive. Really good game by Maddie.
Teamwise, hard defense, better shot selection, good free throw shooting, too many turnovers, but not as many poor passes. Crisp plays on offense, and hard nose defense. Keep it up.

I thought Sherri alluded to the idea that she was still looking for a starting five, as well as determining who, among a lot of talent, would emerge. She indicated that the Vegas tournament will still be a part of that search. I suspect that Vivi, Peyton, Maddie, Chelsea, and Gabbi are emerging. She finally had good things to say about Gabbi today.

Texas is hosting Tennessee. At the half, Texas led 37-32. But, they didn't score until 4:17 of the third quarter when McCarty hit the second of two free throws. They finally got going and took a 48-46 lead into the fourth.

edit: final Texas 72-67

Treece was the only player who did not play. Sick or in Coales doghouse? Anyone know?

Sherri mentioned a few weeks ago that McKenna had a chronic hip problem and they didn't know from game to game whether she would be available. I'm assuming this was a game she didn't feel well enough to play. This will be something that bothers her the rest of the year, and career, if she continues to play, I'm sure.

So is it possibly true that awarding tulsa a gift two points is the correct call? If so there's a loophole that needs to be closed. In second half we had the ball they stole it and we fouled them. It was the 5th foul of the qtr but the zebras missed it and gave Tulsa the ball side out. They go down and in about 10 seconds they score. Zebra then blows the whistle the three of them discuss it one of them i guess realized they had screwed up. So the girl who was fouled goes to the FT line with no one else there, like a technical, and shoots 2 ft which she makes. But they don't take the basket off the board. So it's a four point play. WTF? What if it was a close game and we lost by one or two? If that is a correct interpretation of the "correctable error" rule it needs to be fixed.

Thanks. Hope she gets some relief during finals week.

Am I the only one that would like to see two of the big girls (EJ, Nancy, and VPL) in the game at the same time?

The announcers said they would like to see Nancy on the floor with Vivi or EJ. I see that as a bit of a problem on defense. They are good at guarding the basket. But, if they have to go outside to guard someone who can shoot, they don't have the mobility to stay with them. It might also cut down on mobility on offense.

Past two games: minutes played, points scored, starters in bold
55 Maddie ---36
42 Peyton---19
42 Chelsea---22
37 Gabbi ----14
36 T'Ona ----14
34 Vivi----15
31 Gioya----4
31 LaNesia-----14
24 Nancy-----21
21 Ijeoma-----9
20 Gileysa-----2
16 Derica------6
8 Shaya-------1
3 McKenna-----0

It is interesting that the only three players averaging double-digits in the past two games are Maddie and the two freshmen!! Anyone disappointed with our freshmen?

If Nancy keeps progressing, it will be hard to keep her minutes from increasing. Maybe even starting?

Nancy hasn't seen Big Twelve competition yet. She may need some time to adjust. Baylor will shove her around with two big ones inside like Brown and Mompremier, and they never seem to call fouls on Baylor. I suspect that Nancy will have it figured out by the end of the year. But, this year, I think the real advantage is that the opposition will find it necessary to have a couple of different approaches: Vivi or EJ as opposed to Nancy. Nancy presents an entirely different set of parameters.

Nancy also is not accustomed to working well within the team framework. In the two games that I saw in the state semi-finals and finals a year ago, the guards made no attempt to involve Nancy in the game (Ogwumike, now at Pepperdine, and Perez, now at Tulsa---we played her today). So, she has to learn how to operate with a legitimate team, and the team has to learn to operate with her. I do see that they are no longer tossing the entry passes at her knees. They have learned to keep the passes up. Nancy is beginning to work well with Maddie inside, and that could become devastating. There is a lot of assembly with this Christmas package.

I think it should be tried. Nancy and McKeena would both be effective at the high post.

Without a doubt this was the best full complete game we have played all year. It looks like the kids are beginning to figure team mates out. Movement without the ball was excellent. Nancy is slowly figuring out where to get the ball and is developing soft hands. Nice to see she can step out and hit that 12-15 foot shot. Chelsi gets it, and is playing with confidence. The big question for me is can Maddie become consistent on a regular basis. Sherri seems to becoming more comfortable with different combinations on the floor and the kids are responding. I can't wait for week after finals, to see how well they play in the vegas tournament. Very good performance today.
