I don't know if I would go so far as to call him great, but OSU should have paid up. People whine about our administration's commitment to basketball - this speaks volumes to OSU's.
OSU had been mediocre for about a decade+ since Sutton went down hill. They weren't great this year but showed a lot of promise and returned main key cogs like Evans and Carroll. Lose a main cog in Forte but still return basically everyone else. You probably wouldn't even have to pay Underwood as much as Illinois did to keep him because next years team probably competes for a Big 12 title if Underwood is back.
Also, would bet a lot of money Gottlieb gets the job. He's the obvious overreaction choice after losing a mercenary coach. I also think he's the right hire.
Illinois is a better job than Oklahoma State. Pokes will be awful next year if Evans is leaving, think the guy was getting out at the right time.

“I don't worry about any of that,” Underwood said. “I'm loyal. My words mean something. I know how great this can be. And that means a lot to me, too.”
Underwood calls OSU the Big 12's second-best job, behind only Kansas, obviously.
“If that offends anybody, I'm sorry,” Underwood said.
“Nobody else has had Mr. (Henry) Iba. Nobody has had Coach (Eddie) Sutton. Nobody else has this building. My expectations levels are high … I'm a big dreamer.”
Obviously money talks, but I have a hard time believing he couldn't have worked out a new money deal with OSU.
This is a pretty BS move by Underwood. Quitting on OSU a day after the season ends out of nowhere.
Kind of a scumbag move.
Out at the right time? He hadn't even brought in his 1st recruiting class yet. He's leaving because of money that he was promised.
This from an OSU board:
Let's not BBQ Holder just yet. If Underwood came to me wanting a raise, I'd ask him to justify it. He'd probably say - I finished 5th in the best league, and I made the tournament.
As Holder I would say - you finished 5th in the league, that's average, you finished 9-9 with only one win against the top 4 and 2 losses against the bottom 5, you lost the first game of the tournament against a 7th place team, your defense was one of the worst in the country, you started 0-6 and ended 0-4. I know they weren't your players, but let's talk after you get your players. If you don't like it (small or no raise?), go sell yourself to someone else.
I don't think that would be an unfair position by Holder. I do think it would be a little premature for Underwood to demand a HUGE raise.
If this is indeed the case, I don't think it is an unreasonable position for Holder to take.

Next year's OSU team is going to be just as bad as this year's OU team, just without the promising core to build on. He was going to have build the whole thing back up from scratch, which is an iffy proposition.
