OKLAHOMA CITY — It is starting to become a routine for No. 1 Westmoore. They take a big lead over their opponent, don’t let up and then win big as their starters rest. That has been the case in almost each of their games this season.
So there was no need to break the habit Friday when the Jaguars hosted Mustang in the semifinals of the Lady Jaguars Classic. After leading by almost 50 points, Westmoore earned an 81-43 victory at Westmoore High.
“I think we came out in the first quarter and really stuck it to them,” Ashley Gomez said. “We knew it was going to be a tougher game than some of the other ones we’ve played. We had to come out and show them what we’re made of. I think we really did well adjusting to their defense and kind of learning to play against that.”
The Jaguars once again started the game throwing haymakers. Spearheaded by its defense, it forced Mustang into turnovers and transformed them into fastbreak points.
Westmoore led by 22 points when the first quarter ended.
The Jaguars’ ability to hit 3-pointers was too much for the Broncos to handle. Gomez led the way with five shots from behind the arc in the first half. But the Jags hit nine as a team, including one from center Kaci Richardson.
“We played really well,” Richardson said. “We did good off the ball movement. It’s good to not just have one player that can shoot the ball. We just played all around.”
Westmoore’s starters didn’t make it out of the third quarter. After taking a 72-24 advantage, Guziec emptied the bench.
Abby Niehues led the Broncos with 11 points. No other player reached double figures.
Gomez led all scorers with 25 points and ended the night with seven 3-pointers. Jessi Murcer scored 20 points while Sydney Chastain added 13.
The victory sets up a titanic matchup with No. 3 Sapulpa in the tournament championship at 6 p.m. tonight.
