When did we turn into the little sisters of the poor?

According to the numbers that have been floating around, the basketball program is bleeding money and has been for some time.

Exactly where (and what) are these numbers that have been floating around. I have not seen them.

If we're losing the kind of money with our basketball program that some are insinuating, we have MUCH bigger problems than who our next coach will be.

Either we aren't losing a disproportionate amount of money when viewed vs other comparable programs (ie those who can compensate for shortfalls in one sport via their massive take with football), or we have some very irresponsible and unexplainable mismanagement of the hoops budget.

IMO, the kind of money we're talking about to bring in Buzz doesn't wash. His experience and results level doesn't warrant a $ 2.2 starting salary.

Just like $ 1.83 million for Anthony Grant at Alabama isn't justified. Yeah, he was supposedly the best recruiter in the country at Florida, but it doesn't translate to that much with so little experience.

I'd offer Jamie Dixon first if we're willing to spend beyond $ 2 M. His contract is up in 2012 so he'd have a smaller buyout. He played ball at TCU before hitching up with Ben Howland.

I'd rather have some money in the budget to overpay assistants.

I'd rather pick up a Bob Stoops type (experienced assistant with tons of coordinator and recruiting experience) like an Anthony Grant from two years ago or Donnie Daniels, Steve Robinson or Bob Hoffman. Donnie Daniels is at Gonzaga and was Howland's top recruiter for years (nine NBA guys). If he wants to be a head coach at $ 900,000, he could assemble a super staff.

Then the salaries grow with the job.

No doubt but Arkansas is getting ready to pay a buyout and hire Mike Anderson for a lot of money and a buyout. .

Yeah, and it would be a terrible move. Look at the level of medicrity Anderson has produced at Mizzou. I can't believe how this guy is hyped up to no end. Hell, they probably shouldn't have been in the tournament over CU.

Well the OU endowment is over 1 billion dollars so I'm pretty sure the school isn't going to go under from spending a couple of mil a year on a basketball coach. (and before you pounce, I know how endowments work).

I never meant to insinuate that OU would be in some sort of financial trouble if we overpaid our Coach, because that's just not the case. I'm sure we can afford a pretty hefty salary, I just don't think it makes sense to.

And, Traveler, I was just referencing articles other posters had posted a week or so ago. I didn't bookmark them, but I'm sure you find them by doing a search. I'm on my phone now so I don't really have any links for ya...

I'm with you on this, Traveler. Or could it be there's something other than numbers floating around here.
