Why should Capel get two more years?

Have seen a couple posts that say Capel will most likely be given two more years even if OU has another losing season. If OU has another losing record, Capel should be let go. I don't want to hear excuses, Capel is responsible for the current roster and is getting paid well to do a better job. Am I asking too much out of Capel?

i think if he has another bad year hes gone we are not a premier bball school (i wish) but we are top 18 and losing like last year is not ok

I think there are more factors than just wins and losses. If the team avoids off court trouble, plays hard, improves throughout the year, exceeds expectations and Capel lands some quality recruits in the early signing period, then I think he should get another year. If the team performs anything like last years team, I'm not sure he should be allowed to finish the year. After next year, it's NCAA or bust.

Agreed

It'll be impossible for ANY coach to win that much with what we'll have next year. Last year we were one of the youngest teams in the country and we return 4 players on our roster from that team only 3 of those played.

I believe in Coach Capel and I definitely believe he is a good coach. I am glad the prima donnas are gone. Capel will get this thing turned around and we will have a winning team sooner than you think. I hope he stays for 10 more years.

Agreed, but all those things have to happen.

If the guys are competing AND Coach Capel has a good class signed in November, it would make sense to give him another year rather than OU starting over. However, if we don't hit with anybody in the next month who will be an immediate impact for us, and OU doesn't do well in early part of the 2011 class, then things might be different.

In answer to the OP's question, it's best for OU & him if he can right the ship somewhat before going elsewhere.

You can't keep changing coaches every other year, but you can"t keep gutting the program of players because you as a coach did'nt know how to control players that you recruited & got paid well to do.I like Capel but if he has another year like this one & things are pointing in that direction, then he must be let go..Go Sooners!!!!!!!

That sums it up for me. From what Jeff has said in the recent interviews, he knows what he must do and I believe he is working hard to get the program back on track. Not sure if he can pull it off but I sure hope he does.

If Capel has another year like the last one, he should be gone. Unfortunately, Joe C. makes too many of his decisions based on $$$. He would have to pay Capel a lot of money to fire him, and most of his hiring decisions come down to money, so I would guess that Capel gets 2 more years.

Capel has SIX years left on his current deal. With the current level of expectations it's hard to imagine him getting canned after next year.

If $$ weren't an issue I'd agree with what boksooner said.

2 more years, minimum...

next year they will have an improved team with effort and that is what needs the most adjustment...wins and losses next year are not going to be looked at like this year, we all know we are going to lose games...

the difference will be in recruiting, next year will be huge to sign some studs and balance it out with a couple of Juco's...if 2012 is bad then Capel will be gone, but i dont think it will come to that...he can get good enough guys to come in and turn it around quickly...

I don't think 2 years is guaranteed. Especially if you see attendance jump off a cliff and we start to become the NJ Nets of the Big 12, which is very possible considering the product on the court.

Obviously he could sign Newell, Thompson and another good player and field a decent team which would mean attendance wouldn't jump off a cliff, but will that happen?

Yes!

I call BS on this. Stoops has been the highest paid coach at certain points in history. Plus, state employee contracts are really only one year deals by law. The extra years are just kinda letter of intents unless something has changed that i don' know about.

Getting a new coach now will likely set the program back even further - even if he ultimately proves to be a better coach, it is likely that things will get worse before it gets better.

We will likely lose two of three recruits who are a fine base for the future if we fire Jeff C. now.

So unless there is a compelling case to fire him based on a perceived inability to right the ship I would say that he has at least two years to get things back on track.

I love how the people screaming for Jeff to get rid of Warren, TMG, and Gallon are now griping about only having 3 guys left on the roster from last year that saw significant minutes. This offseason is exactly what most on this board were screaming for a month ago. Now that it has transpired, will they weather the storm they wanted to create or gripe about it tirelessly? I would hope everyone would get behind the program and support it most during its time of need.
