Why should Capel get two more years?

I love how the people screaming for Jeff to get rid of Warren, TMG, and Gallon are now griping about only having 3 guys left on the roster from last year that saw significant minutes. This offseason is exactly what most on this board were screaming for a month ago. Now that it has transpired, will they weather the storm they wanted to create or gripe about it tirelessly? I would hope everyone would get behind the program and support it most during its time of need.

:clap

I was not one of those. I wanted at least 2 of the 3 back. That would have been best for OU.

It was Jeff Capel that brought the players in that have resulted in this situation. At the end of the day, it is his fault.

And??It's not the posters or fans fault....Go Sooners!!!!!

I have not posted in a while. I was one of the first requesting Capel's termination (and was slammed). This request still has not waivered - as Donald Trump says "You're Fired"! I read about how replacing coaches sets programs back?? Well this Program is in the back of the bus right now, so why not pull the trigger? Take care of this situation now, it can not get much worse! I am now and always will be a TRUE FAN of OU! What ever comes my way can not change the Passion I have for OU - so flame away!

The quote in your sig is from Gerald Ford, not Thomas Jefferson.

First of all IF you think it can't get worse you don't know the history of OU basketball. There have MNY coaches who couldn't win 82 games at OU in their entire careers let alone Capel's four years.IF Capel were forced out OU would be left searching for another coach who would be an assistant looking for a HC gig or a lower tier program coch looking for a power conference gig.All of the coaches hired at OU since I first started following OU hoops in the mid-70's have fallen into this trend.Bliss was a Bobby Knight aide,Tubbs coached at Lamar,Sampson had a sparkling 103-103career mark at Washington State when he came to Norman. The point is we will get someone just like Bliss,Tubbs,Sampson or Capel and the issues of rebuilding will STILL be there.Starting all over makes little sense.Personally I think Joe C. and Boren will give him at least 3 more years ,as long as there are no offcourt issues and progress is made.IMHO Gaprl hasearned it.

Gaprl has earned it.

I think he'll get two more years, but only if he shows he deserves it.

How?

First, I think anybody looking at our roster right now would be shocked if we are competitive in the Big12 next season. So I don't ttink he will be indicted too much for next year's on-the-court results.

What would be a positive year for Jeff, in terms of him keeping his job another year, would be the following, IMO:

1) Recruiting - if it appears we aren't bringing in good players for 2012, then there will be a strong contingent of powerful alums pushing for him to go. He has to at least have the appearance of moving in the right direction from here forward.

2) Disciplinary issues - With WW, Tiny, and TMG gone, alot of people are saying we got rid of the "cancer" in the locker room. If we continue to have guys who get in trouble or don't listen to the coach, then that argument is blown out of the water. That wouldn't be good for Coach C. I know he isn't blaming the players publicly for what went down, but alot of people are, and that is probably what is buying him more time. You only get to use that defense once.

3) Heart, hustle, etc... - Didn't see a whole lot of it last year, despite an apparent wealth of physical talent. Seeing a team scrap, even if it's in defeat, would be a welcome sight for many of us fans. This team needs to hang in there next year and not show signs of quitting on Coach Capel, or they may be hanging him out to dry.

He's got an uphill battle, but he should be given the opportunity to show he can dig out of it. However, the leash should be short enough that if he shows enough signs that he can't do it, then we move in another direction in a fairly quick manner.

Some of us are just simply lucky enough to be surrounded by a bunch of know-it alls. I will continue to review this page and learn from all of the on this page.
