Woodard

JW had a bad night, but so did cousins (4pt, 2rb, 1a, 4to) which is WAY under his averages. We can't fault one player, or two players. KSU put up about 10 more shots, and hit 5% more of their shots than we did. Any team in this league can do this on any given night. Our guys know what it takes, they learned that last year, and we have four of those starters back. It's way too early to worry about this team, they will respond, and we all know how good they can play when they do.

I told you guys awhile ago. Woodard is not the answer. I've played point guard as the smallest guy on the court. You have to hustle, be pesky/annoying on D, hit open shots on O, and setup your teammates with assists. Woodard doesn't do much of this at all. He seems to be going through the motions out there when he should be providing the energy.

Maybe Kruger should get you to do it.

His offense needs a lot of work but he's still got a 2 to 1 assist to turnover ratio and that's after yesterday's awful game. He needs to be able to hit open 16 footers and get into the lane sometimes to score, dish, or get fouled. But there's a whole lot of overreacting to 1 bad game here. Cousins was about as bad as Woodard yesterday.

I guarantee that if his 3 pointer at the end of regulation had fallen -- remember, it bounced all over that rim before falling off -- there would be a lot of hero - worship here today.

But it didn't and none of his shots bfore halftime have either.

Woodard is killing the team out there... 11% from 3 and 30% from the field isn't acceptable.

Woodard needs to be better at managing the team as a PG and shooting higher percentage shots and not shooing jump shots. That being said he's done way better the last month or so of the season at being a PG than he was the first of the year where he was a turnover waiting to happen at times. The team really has no other options at PG right now than Jordan Woodard.

OU tried to get "Tum Tum" Nairns last year, and lost out at the very end to Michigan State. He was from Buddy's old HS and I thought we were going to land him. He would have helped. Also, that juco that didn't end up qualifying from NY would have been good.

I think we have Woodard and Cousins until Pritchard gets here. Get used to it.

It wasn't just Woodard. Spangler misses the front end of a one and one. Thomas misses free throws late. Spangler hands Woodard tha ball when he is standing out of bounds. So many lose balls bounced KSU's way. OU defende late into the clock and some crazy shot would fall. It was a team loss.

You can go ahead and compare two players who had a poor performance but the difference is one of these players has been very consistent w/his play over the course of the season.

Was reading the phog.net forum, and they have a thread about what a much better shooter Woodard has become.

Thought that this thread would be fun to bump - although I had about 5 Woodard threads from last year to choose from. Woodard's improvement from last year to this year is the reason you can't be so reactionary about someone's play from minute to minute.

People were literally saying he wasn't a D1 player last year. Hilarious.

Was very confused with this thread, started one year ago today. Brain is still used to seeing 2015

"On the difference in OU last year vs. this year: “Woodard. Woodard. It’s not even a question. We didn’t guard him last year. We just didn’t guard him. We got here this morning and it was a semi-blizzard for Oklahoma—I’m from Wisconsin and that was just a rain shower—and Cousins was here at 7:30 this morning shooting before us. I don’t know how he got here. There was a little scooter out there so if that was his then he rode here in the snow. I don’t know, I’m probably starting some rumor, but those guys—Buddy started it. They have a culture of a commitment to getting better. Hield took it to another level, Cousins took it to another level, Spangler has taken it to another level and now Woodard has taken it to another level"

Thanks for posting these quotes from Bruce Weber, slides! It makes me smile to see an opposing coach comment about the difference dedication and hard work from the leaders on this team have made from one year to the next.

This is my favorite part:

I think we'll see the same kind of commitment carried over to next year. Jordan and Khadeem will not let it fade away when Buddy, Isaiah and Ryan leave. I also think some of our younger players will buy into what our seniors have been selling, because they have seen with their own eyes what it takes to improve and to be really good.

Not sure how he said it but Weber's quote reads with a tinge of jealousy.

He's made tremendous progress from last year. A year ago, we needed him to be a player that teams had to guard on offense. Now, he's a weapon.

What really gets me from reading the comments by those who were overreacting to a bad game is that people were questioning his effort and work ethic. Anyone who watches him play knows that isn't an issue. He's hustling down the court, stealing the ball on defense, running the point when Cousins is out of the game. He is going to be our leader next year, and probably an All-conference performer.

It also shows how far players like Odomes and James can come in a year or two with work. It takes a while for young players to adjust to the college game and that will be true for McGusty, Freeman, and anyone else, too. We'll still have threads created around this time next year, though, that complain about a bad game by one of the freshmen or sophomores and how they should be benched. Too many fans are just impatient and expect these young guys to be stars immediately.

Agreed, I don't know how many times I've said this year, "Wow, how did Woodard come up with that rebound?".

Jordan is also better at following his shot than any player I can think of. I wish more players did that.
