That takes a pretty attractive job off the table for Tier 1-a to Tier 2 candidates, aka Porter Moster.

Also, add another top-notch HC getting out of college athletics since the start of and primarily due to NIL when they still have years left and gas in the tank. Bennett, Jay Wright, Saban, Jim Larranga... and that's not counting the ones who have retired a little earlier, or moved to assistant roles.

It's why a GM is no longer a luxury position- need it to not only competitively manage a roster in this era but to also prevent coaches from burning out.

I'm not sure that pm even sniffed tier-3 or lower jobs lol. No one was ever interested in him but his agent got his name out there a lot

In 2 years, as the inside scoop said, when McDermott decides to retire. If PM makes the tourney both years, maybe grabs a tournament win, he would be the type of candidate that would be attractive for it. A coach who improves a program in the SEC would definitely be a low Tier 1/Tier 2 coach for a successful Big East program.

I agree that his agent and Lusk promoted him more than people contacted him, and I'm not saying he would be the choice today. But he could be in a year or two.

Well see.. given his history of making the tourney 3 times out of 21 years.. it would require a significant upward turn to make it even 1 more time out of 2 years

devil's advocate a bit: how many times does "head coach in waiting" work out? just because i'm a Sooner.....I bring up the Will Muschamp and Mack one.

McDermott does a great job at Creighton after getting canned at ISU.

what creighton is doing is pretty much a copy of what purdue did .. and that has worked out pretty well .. lots of reports that McDermott was the driver of it .. and plans to retire either next year or the year after ..

you mean Matt Painter HC in W for Gene Keady? fair enough. 20 years ago maybe? not disagreeing, that is a good example.

you look at how many flunked "auditions" former Dukies had to replace K......Quin Snyder, Johnny Dawkins, Jeff Capel, Wojo, and Shreyer seems to be a good choice.

painter was a former purdue player .. who was a HC .. that came back to coach with then replace his boss .. and keady was on board with it .. that is why i think it is similar ..

It’s worked out well 1-2 times. More often than not, it does not work out well. You cite Purdue. Not many other examples of it working out and vast majority end poorly.

I think a unique difference here is that it isn’t a long time assistant or some form of nepotism. Huss had gone out on his own and run a program for two years and been ultra successful. Having a guy that is an alum, from the general area, and has a track record of demonstrated success as the head man makes this a really solid transition plan
