Allen to Focus on Family
Junior center plans to graduate this summer and forgo his senior season.

April 14, 2010

NORMAN, Okla. - Men's basketball player Orlando Allen said today that he will forgo his senior season at the University of Oklahoma to focus on his family.

Allen, a 6-10, 290-pound junior center who became a father last month, said, "My plan is to graduate this summer and move forward in my life by getting a job and supporting my family.

"I had an overall great experience at OU. I really enjoyed the fan support and I thank my coaches for the opportunity they gave me to come to OU and make something of my life. And I wish my teammates the best in everything they do."

Allen averaged 1.2 points and 1.9 rebounds in his nine games this year. He played a total of 63 minutes on the season and made four of his eight field goal attempts.

A Cincinnati, Ohio, native, Allen transferred to OU from Paris (Texas) Junior College. Last year, his first as a Sooner, he averaged 1.8 points and 0.8 boards in his 19 outings.

Said OU head coach Jeff Capel, "I admire Orlando for doing what he feels is best for his family. Our staff supports his decision and we wish him and his family well as he moves on to the next phase of his life."

I had a feeling he wouldn't be playing next season for one reason or another. Good luck to him!

Good decision for Big O. Thanks for being a Sooner and God bless.

Just wondering, how many players do we have now? I lost track.

Good Luck Big O! Regardless of how your basketball career went, getting that degree is the real accomplishment.

All the best and congrats on the degree.

Good for him sometimes there's more important things in life than a game.

Funny how a family suddenly makes health insurance and mortgage payments seem more important than blocking out on a rebound.

Best of luck to you Big O and congratulations on the degree!

Great to see Allen getting a degree.

Raising kids is a far bigger/better endeavor than playing sports. Best of luck to you Orlando.

Family is THE most important thing in life.

Good luck, Orlando.!!

Kid is a class act. Got hardly any playing time last year even though he could have helped, but was always the head cheerleader from the bench. He could've sulked or grown disinterested, but he didn't. That's a major credit to his character.
