Any chance we don't suck next year?

With the roster we have, and the possible additions that remain, I think the NIT would be the best case scenario.

I think we may be in a situation like Indiana is in right now especially if the NCAA comes down on us hard. This is year 3 for crean and he still hasn't made the tourney. He's got a great 2011 and 2012 class though. I'm gonna say were 3 years away

What worries me is the possibility of losing what talent we have.

I think we will be better than this year (few games above .500 is my prediction if we don't lose key players on the roster now) but I think that would have been the outcome if Capel had been retained as well. Maybe some of that will be due to the new coach, but I'm betting the majority of it will be on our current players taking a step forward due to having an extra year under their belts.

I was in the Capel getting another year camp, but can understand OU making the move. I am curious though to see how things shake out now that the change has been made. It will be interesting to see who (if any) from the current roster defects. It wouldn't hurt to lose a couple of the guys, but there are a few who could leave that would make this year look like a success compared to what will happen with an even further depleted roster.

Assuming we retain our current roster and keep Goff I think we'll be slightly better. Unless Osby really is as good as Capel has said, if he is I suppose we could be significantly better.

I sure hope we can add some pieces in the late signing period, but given the timing of things it's hard to be too optimistic.

It depends on if we get any recruits. Generally in coaching changes the players stay for the most part. Some of the lower talent may leave but the guys that played and are main contributors will stay generally. I hope we have some kind of style which will go a long ways in making us better. I don't know what type of expectations we can have. I would hope it's around 16-18 games. Possible NIT type thing.

I'm not worried about losing talent because it is too late for that (worrying; have to let the chips fall). As long as Neal and Clark stick around and Osby cant go anywhere and I think we will be fine. Fitz and Pledger are decent players but both have severe limitations and both are going to have to rebound and play defense which neither cares too much about.

I think a good defensive coach could have taken this years team to postseason play because we win 5-6 more games if we play better defense.

So, the roster as it looks now has enough talent that combined with good coaching and some good defense and rebounding can win more than 14 games.

I think that's about right. But we need Fitz and Pledge, defense or no defense.

We were going to be a bubble NIT team with Capel..

With the current roster, yes, with some additions it could've been better.

Again, in the grand scheme of things, next year isn't that important (W's and L's wise) now that we'll have a new coach. It'll be about laying a solid foundation and bringing in a big time recruiting class for 2012.

We lose Cade, but the rest should improve. If we get a coach that is a good teacher then i think we will do better. I think Blair and Fitz will improve a great deal and the if the rest get better as they should (Cam, Newel and Pledger) then that is not a completely bare cupboard. Without injuries (cause we won't have any depth) i would think getting to the NIT or CBI would be likely

No, there is no chance we don't suck next year.

At this point there are so many variables in play, but I would say our best case scenario would be to be a bubble team hovering around 20 wins.

That would mean we hire a quality coach, still snag a PG and a post who can contribute something next season, and don't lose any quality players to transfer.

That is our ceiling, IMO. It could go much worse. Mediocre talent, learning a new system, NCAA question marks looming, don't know who the coach is going to be. It's all a cluster right now.

In my opinion I think that Capel deserved a couple of more years, but I also thought that about John Blake.............So what do I know? I agree not much! But here is my take on this situation. Basketball is different than Football (there are only 10-12 BB players compared to 80-85 FB players on the team), so I think OU BB has a very long and difficult road back. I think to get to .500 next year should make for the new coach (whoever that my be) to be in consideration for National Coach of the Year. I think and I am fearful that there may be defections on the team. If this team could somehow manage to keep Fitz, Clark, Neal, and Osby to build around then I would feel much better. I think some/a couple of those four mentioned kids will look elsewhere and appeal to the NCAA for a special grant to become eligable next season (Not sure that they would be granted this request, but you never know - stranger things have happened). Suck? IMO it will get alot worse before it gets better. I hope that I am wrong and I will always support The Program, after all We Are The Oklahoma Sooners and I am proud to tell anyone!

You are wrong.
Basketball is much easier to turn around than football.
One player took us to the elite 8 with an average coach.
A coach like Gillispie would have us dancing in year 2.

Hasn't made the tourney? Boy is that an understatement,IU is 28-65 since Sampson left after Phoegate2.

Next Year? Next Year? NEXT YEAR? Bwahahahahaha...

Is our fans base so blind and delusional that we don't see how this is being played in the national media? Capel is coming out looking like a Golden boy and we're looking like a bunch of short sighted impatient kids who feel they're too big for their britches.

We're about to enjoy a half decade of being the new Colorado...

Whatever.

Capel took the 2nd best program in the conference and turned it into the 11th best in 5 short years. Media around the country recognized it because a lot of people have been wondering if Capel would survive another dismal season.

If anything, we look like morons for hiring Capel. I can remember some national media folks questioning the hire big time when it was done.
