I was only 7 when we lost to Kansas in '88. So I can only remember bits and pieces of the game. The one thing that does stand out though was the look on my dad's face after the game. He had this look of confusing and disbelief. Like he was on a hidden camera show.
During my time a few that stand out our the '95 game against Manhattan. I was in the 9th grade and the day before during some free time towards the end of my algebra class me and a couple of friends were going over the bracket and I said something along the lines of: "Manhattan... whoever that is. Who do we meet in the next round." Then my teacher said something about not over looking teams like that then sure enough we lost.
I have a great dislike for Indiana mainly because of the '98 game when Humphrey blocks that shot to get us to OT only to lose, then of course '02 was almost too much to handle. And then to top it off they swoop in and take Kelvin. Needless to say I couldnt be happier when they had those down years from '08-'11
85 Memphis and 87 Iowa really sucked. In the Iowa game, we had an 18 or 19 point lead and blew it. Ironically, in Iowa's next game against UNLV, the Hawkeyes blew a double digit lead and missed the Final 4.
Since I transferred in to OU in '98, that's where my point of reference begins (that Indiana loss sucked that year).
Excluding '02 Indiana, the obvious choice:
1) '03 Syracuse - I really thought that was our year. Obviously, with a hurt Hollis, it wasn't in the cards.
2) '09 UNC - We ran into the best team before the Final Four, but I certainly thought we had a shot.
3) '00 Purdue - That was my last college gasp. I was already living in Chicago, which made it worse since our alumni group was at the same bar as the Purdue group.
4) '01 Indiana State - I didn't even watch the game, thinking there was no way we'd lose it. I was driving in my car for work listening to us lose - in Indiana.
5) '05 Utah - That was a team that could have made a run.
I would have to say the '03 game as well....but nothing tears my heart out like '88. I was a junior in highschool and the next class day we had our PE teacher showed up in a jayhawk t-shirt. Still bitter to this day.
SWLA loss haunted me for a while, but Brian Sallier got hurt in the Big 8 Tournament and was a shell of himself in that game. Brent Price is one of my all-time favorite Sooners and it killed me. That team was really playing well and had a shot at a real run before Sallier was injured.
Yep, we should have beaten Iowa and if we did beat them we had a great chance to make the final 4 because we had already beaten UNLV. I hated Kevin Gamble, Ron Marble, and BJ Armstrong MOST OF ALL after that game. Didn't T-Mac miss some free throws down the stretch which helped Iowa to win with the last second 3?
Also the '89 loss to UVA sucked too.
Another stacked OU team. They went 30-6 that year.
So yeah...pretty much the NCAA tourney from '87-'90 was a kick in the balls. But only because those OU teams were freaking awesome.
I was a sr. in HS during the 88/89 season and I remember down the stretch of the season we didn't look like a final 4 team. We played our best basketball with the wins AT UNLV, Mizzou (the game where Tubbs got the T's for telling the fans "no matter how bad the officiating is, please don't throw anything on the floor" :ez-laugh and Arizona (with Sean Elliott) in late January/early February. The last few weeks of the season we were whipped at Mizzou (13 point loss; were never really in the game), barely beat OSU in Norman (OSU wasn't very good), then had to go to 2 OT's to beat CU (who was terrible back then) in the Big 8 quarterfinals, beat ISU on a last second shot by Tyrone Jones in the semi's and pasted again by Mizzou in the big 8 finals. Then we had a comeback win over 16th seed E Tennessee State in the first round of the tourney in Nashville before throttling La Tech in the 2nd round. Next game was the loss to UVa and I wasn't really surprised because we just couldn't get it back.
The 2003 loss to Syracuse in the elite 8 was pretty tough....just went ice cold and Hollis was injure the entire tournament. Would have been OU/Texas in the national semis and OU/Kansas in the National Title game....
This is #1 for me as well. Not only because it was Hollis & Co.'s last game, but also because New Orleans (Final 4 site that year) was only a couple hours away from where I lived. I went to the Final 4 in Atlanta the year before when OU played there, and it was awesome. The thought of Bourbon Street plus watching OU in the Final 4 was just too good to be true...
How about 01 against Indiana St. when we lose a double digit lead.
89 Stacey King and Mookie Blaylocks senior year lose to Virginia.
Loss to Iowa 87
Loss to Indiana in 98
Loss to Utah in 05
