I certainly agree that it was a classless act - and absolutely expected from a school like Baylor that does not have even a small ethical base. But it is also a perfect symbol of our country and the kind of social approach many parents, politicians, and large corporations are modeling.
Just a few minutes ago I was channel surfing and came upon the last few seconds of the Division 2 football championship game. With 50 seconds left and a multi-TD lead, classless NW Missouri was trying to run up the score - and finally scored again. Total lack of class. Instead of being excited to win a National Championship, all they could think about is trying to humiliate their opponent. Exactly what we can expect from most sports teams today. Never enough. Humiliate your opponent - just winning is worthless. Beat them into a pulp if you can.
Same kind of people we worship in society. Worth and value are measured in only one way: How much money can you get - by any means.
How can we be surprised when sports teams act in the exact way society models in every area?
The fact that religious schools like Baylor are leading the pack in displaying a win at all costs mentality (and a beat your opponent into the dirt addiction) is a major symptom of the disease. They should be the ones that encourage humility, kindness, respect, etc. But they turn out to be the worst of the bunch.
