Berry Tramel's Chat quotes on Capel/OU basketball situation

Here are the quotes on the OU basketball situation from Berry Tramel's chat earlier today.

Jamie: Your take on the OU basketball situation? Are we looking at a disaster?

Berry Tramel: Iceberg! Iceberg! Abandon ship. Abandon ship. Absolute, total disaster. The captain is nowhere to be found, headquarters doesn't know what's going on, the seamen are diving for the life boats. This is a total catastrophe.

Thomas: Think Capel makes it through all this with his job?

Berry Tramel: You know, I think so. But I'm not convinced anymore. It's not just the events that are most troubling. It's how Capel has handled the events. Where is he? Any reassuring words? Any connection to the fan base that everything is going to be OK? I haven't seen it. The Sooners hired an inexperienced coach, and that inexperience is biting OU in the butt.

Bo: The timing of the Taliaferro "resignation" is troubling, too. If he's tied to the Gallon mess, I don't see how Capel survives. Your take, BT?

Berry Tramel: Taliaferro was fired, no doubt about it. If he was involved in NCAA infractions, I think Capel's goose could be cooked.

Jonathan: If Capel leaves can you think of any potential replacements?

Berry Tramel: The pool is a little less than normal, because the situation is so bad. I mean, you'd call the Butler coach, but he'd be a fool to leave. Gillispie is available; if he'd straighten up his act, he wouldn't be a bad choice. But I don't think you can take a chance on him personally.

OUNck: How can OU not be on top of things after the Bomar and Samsung fiasco? Is Joe C.'s job on the line also?

Berry Tramel: I don't think this is an NCAA issue, as far as the paramount problem. I just think the program spun out of control in terms of players bickering, then playing bad, then leaving. I'd say the NCAA is not the major issue concerning OU basketball right now. The problem is, there are no players and no apparent adult supervision. I don't think Castiglione's job is on the line.

You can forget about Stevens, Tramel. Butler just inked him to a 12 year deal. The only coach I can think of who could possibly save this sinking ship is Kelvin Sampson. Technically, he's barred from coaching college basketball until 2013 as part of a show-cause order, but OU could get special permission from the NCAA Infractions Committee to rehire him. OU exhibited tremendous toughness and discipline during his 12 years at the helm. Boy, do we miss him!

Jeff needs to begin communicating with the "fan" base. Unless he's being told to stay quite. I'm totally miffed at this unfortunate senario.

This is about the third time in the last 24 hours I've heard this.

Not sure if serious?

The fact that Capel is remaining silent is very troubling indeed.

Yup Capel is somewhat MIA right now this is bad

Probably the weirdest thing about all of this is the lack of communication from the Athletic department and Capel...

I guess they were hoping that article about TMG and Ray would be enough for all of us concerning the players leaving...but that didnt clear much up except what we already assumed was going to happen...When Capel said he would announce things in a couple of weeks (a month or so ago), i thought it would be more in depth...not just focusing on a couple of guys...

And that's extremely troubling. I'm afraid there's a reason we're not hearing anything. Like, it's worse than anyone knows or Capel's already been shown the door and it hasn't been released. Kind of a "Get the Clemson job if you can" type scenario.

i could see that...

or Joe is out looking for candidates and wanting to have someone in hand before letting Capel go so he can control the frenzy as much as possible...

With this said, I've just about heard it all. Maybe the worst thing that could happen!

Kelvin Sampson ain't gonna happen. His son has a better shot than he has. Tubby Smith is the first guy you gotta go after. After that it'll be someone pretty cheap.

Tubby....why?

He will be 60 years old, hasn't made it to the 2nd weekend of the NCAA tourney in 6 years, etc

In times of turmoil is when you need the MOST communication with your fanbase, not the least.

This whole things just sucks.

It seems to me that it's more the athletic department's responsibility to issue some statement than it is Capel's.

He's getting most if not all of his info from this board, I would almost lay money on it.
