Capel is now squarely in the hunt. How many wins would he need to win it?

Is 9-7 enough? All the other coaches know what he's had to overcome. They see every player on the team improving, buying into Capel's demands. Who else is even in the running?

It's awesome to watch.

Barnes is playing with 4 five star studs. If OU beats Texas in Norman and finishes 9-7 Capel did a better coaching job than Barnes.

Yea, but jesus, 9-7? If you are right, i'll let you beat me in pickup basketball and you can retain your title.

Boca, I've quietly been in your corner simply because I'm optimistic by nature. And yes, a 9-7 conference record would make Jeff the Big XII Coach of the Year. However, we're only 3-3 right now, so it's way too soon for that kind of talk.

Regardless, I predicted 2 conference wins, so I will gladly have crow for dinner tomorrow...and the portion sizes will get bigger with each victory.

If OU goes 9-7 then Capel wins in a landslide. Unfortunately, I don't believe we will get anywhere close to 9 wins.

3-3 lmao jeff

Doing the best coaching job with the available talent is not necessarily the primary criterion for selection of coach of the year. Winning big is. More often than not it includes winning the conference championship.

This is pretty much true. We would have to get a lot better soon to get to 9 wins. It would be an amazing season. Who knows, though. We just got as many wins as I thought we would get in the big 12 all season.

Isn't Barnes the coach who recruited those players? Does he not get credit for putting a quality product on the court?

I would be content with six wins at this point. It is more than I expected.

We have to play Baylor. Then maybe OSU. We may not win another game till the last game of the regular season after that point. We have Nebraska in the middle of a run of games against Texas, @ Mizzou, @ KSU, @ Texas A&M, and Kansas. There's a chance we could end the season 0 fer because of that tough schedule. There's no way Capel will even touch coach of the year with how good Texas is this year.

Last year we were 4-4 and finished 4-12. So yeah, perhaps we might want to see how things play out.

Why? Waiting to see how things play out is not logical. lol This board is like a YO-YO.

Precisely why I'm not getting too excited about a 3-3 start.

Also, even if OU has a great run and winds up with a winning record, the expectations will only be higher for next year. I remember John MacLeod winning Big East Coach of the Year with Notre Dame the year he was on the hot seat. The next year, things went a bit south and he was fired. That is why, despite being excited by a 3-3 start, I'm staying a bit guarded.

Doc Sadler, Tad Boyle, Bill Self and Rick Barnes all major players in the hunt as well.
Personally, I think if Texas wins the conference (and they probably will with the easy schedule the rest of the way) that Barnes will get it.
