We need to do a better job of teaching our kids the difference between selfishness and independence. Too many people seem to think they are interchangeable.
I dont know that it's a teaching thing. It's an internal narrative issue that seems to rely on what was used for ones' sense of security. I know experience can make a difference but how that threshold is reached is another story. it may go all the way back to maternal bonding.
Some people are ready to make that leap and some aren't. How they got there I dont know. I know we all start off as ME thinkers and then some become we thinkers and some dont. I think it's a matter of your internal narrative giving you enough objectivity and independence. That's really dependent on the first 2 years then up to the 7th year of life.
