Capel acknowledged in the presser yesterday that he knew after the Colorado game that TMG was going pro.

My question is, at that point why not pull him and do something else to plan for the future? That was loss 3 of the 9 game losing streak and the next 5 games were: KSU, KU, Baylor, Texas, aTm. We knew we didn't have a chance in those games, so why continue to build on an already horrible season by leaving TMG in the lineup?

Why not play some players who were going to be here in the future? Obviously, Franklin isn't good enough but why not play Davis or Pledger at point? At the very least they could get some experience for next year as they may play point some next year if we don't sign somebody.

If pulling TMG from the lineup altogether is dumb, then why not pull him out for 5-8 minutes per half to build for the future? In that scenario, Franklin could have played some just to get him some experience and reward him for trying. He played some against osu and I thought he did pretty decent for a walkon.

It's a combination of no other guy to play the position and you still want what is best for him. And if he wants to leave it would be rude to just sit him. That could also hurt future recruits if TMG tells a guy that "Capel benched me after I told him I'm leaving"

Thanks for the response. I had wondered if that was a reason, but how many recruits would TMG speak with? I guess he could post it on facebook, but who could read it? :ez-roll:

Maybe he knows recruits from the AAU circuit or from his home area.

Seriously, what were we going to do? He was playing 40 minutes a game. Was Ray Willis (also leaving) going to play the point? Was TJ Franklin going to play for 40 minutes a game? At some point you just have to try to win the games. We were still playing for an NIT berth. If Willie was still healthy we could have just played him more and TMG less, but he wasn't and we did what we had to do.

Because TMG gave us the best shot to win...and that is what a coach at this level is measured by. That's your answer.

I think Nick's explanation is spot on. It's never good to be forced to rely on one player at the point guard position. But when that player lacks in maturity and the dedication necessary to be a team leader, the results can be disastrous. Willie's injuries hurt the team in more ways than one, because he was the only other player capable of running the offense.

You don't bench players out of spite because they are leaving.

Isn't this really tied to Capel's biggest prolem?

Who else could he turn to at PG?

He was in his fourth year as the coach, and yet barely had enough viable players to put on the court.

I know that signing a quality point guard every year isn't easy. But in view of Capel's background as a PG himself at a high major school, I think it's odd that this has been one of the most difficult challenges he has faced since he came to OU.

In all honesty, it may have started when he left VCU, providing the reports that Eric Maynor wanted to come to OU with him were true. While I admire his advice to Maynor to remain at VCU, one has to wonder if things would have been different had Capel not been so noble? That decision was the beginning of a series of mishaps that included passing on John Roberson hoping Jai Lucas would be a Sooner, to Bobby Maze's departure to start at Tennessee for two seasons, and so on.

It seems that every season, we have been caught with our shorts down around our ankles when it comes to signing a true point guard who is capable of leading the offense and the team. That is not meant as a knock on one of my favorite players, Austin Johnson. AJ did the best he could to fill that role, and in retrospect for some who didn't appreciate what he brought to the team as much as I did, he was one heck of a player who could have really helped us last season. But we all know that he was a Sampson recruit, who was not brought to OU to play the point.

While we desperately need more help at the post, we will be in big trouble again this fall if we don't sign a point guard. I have a lot of confidence in T.J. Taylor. I believe he is going to be one heck of a player. But we're fooling ourselves to think that a freshman, who is more of a combo guard than a true PG, is going to come in and hit the ground running as the guy in charge of our offense. He CANNOT play 40 minutes in every game and have anything left in his tank as the season progresses.

Capel's #1 priority has to be to sign a point guard. It seems that has been a familiar theme since the day he arrived.

The bottom line is never have a roster that doesn't have 2 pure PG and 1 SG who can slide over and handle the PG duties if someone is tired or hurt.

The NTexas PG would've been a major asset the last couple years and wasn't he Q White's bro?

Yes, and yes.

Josh White was one of several really good point guards OU missed out on while trying to land bigger fish. Time will tell if our coaches learned anything from those experiences.

If Bobby Maze stayed we are probably a little better off last year.

YOU DON'T PLAY/COACH FOR NEXT YEAR, YOU PLAY/COACH FOR THIS YEAR...ALL THE WAY UNTIL THE SEASON IS OVER.

THIS IS AN IGNORANT POST. If you ever have a high school or college coach that starts coaching for the next season while you are in your current one...they should fire his ass. You have the whole offseason to coach and train for the next season.

TMG was the future, and gave OU the best chance to win.
