D'Angelo Russell

Celtics are in a really good position IMO. They have the cap space to add an offensive PF in either Love or Aldridge and Pierce prolly comes back to finish his career. Add that to what they have and they are ready to contend in the East.

Love would be the king of Boston. Everything about him fits for the C's. I think he's going to sign a short deal and stay with the Cavs though.

C's are right there ready to take off but just need that guy to get the ball rolling. It's looking like they are going to strike out on free agents and will have to rely on trades to get that star.

Marc Gasol says the Lakers are out because of how fans and management in L.A. treated his brother.

I watched some 5-on-5 scrimmage for the Lakers summer team, and Clarkson looked amazing out there. Randle looked pretty good as well, and Nance was showcasing his athleticism with some pretty impressive put-back dunks. It might take Russell more time than I thought to adjust, though. It's just a summer league scrimmage, so I'm not that concerned or anything, but I can see what the Lakers were talking about when neither guy thoroughly impressed them in workouts. I'm still excited for his future, but I'd be surprised if he beat out Clarkson for a starting role by opening night (but not that surprised if they started alongside each other).

Just a scrimmage, though. This shouldn't be the slightest bit newsworthy, but it's the offseason.

Russell will start, even if he's not ready. You don't sell the lakers future with a first year bench player

Russell
Clarkson
Kobe
Randle
Hibbert

Will be the starting lineup. Nance does look very athletic and Randle might be able to play some 3 with his quickness and handles. Upshaw looks out of shape and slow. Just a first glimpse but not impressive.

Yes the Lakers are going to be terrible again.

Dream on Celtic!! The Lakers have assembled a very good core that will only improve. Randle's handling skills and burst are going to shock people. The comparison to Zach Randolph is not applicable. He's going to be a bigger, stronger James Harden destroying people off the dribble. Look for him to move to the 3 with Nance manning the 4.

On the break whoever gets the board between Russell, Clarkson or Randle is going to push it. Attack. Showtime.

I don't see the upside with Randle sorry. The Lakers are a lottery team again next season. That's not a bad thing tho. Kobe will eat Hibbert alive in practice.

You will see.... Randle is a beast, and he will show it. He is huge and can handle the ball like a guard, and finish with authority. He can defend the 3 position in the NBA, but the 4 position will have trouble guarding him, and the 3 has no chance.

Guy is going to be a beast.... book it.

I'm not sure how you can't see the upside.

The Lakers are probably a lottery team again, but with a chance at grabbing a 7 or an 8 seed given the offseason of the Mavs and Blazers had. Being a lotto team isn't a good thing for the Lakers, as Philly owns the pick, and it's a tougher selling point in FA.

Bingo. The Lakers need to pass the Mavs and Blazers. Thunder will take 1 spot for sure. Lakers fighting with the others for the final spot.

I don't like undersized power forwards. When I see Randle I see a better Brandon Bass. He'll be a good player but I don't see an All-star by any means. If I eat crow so be it. I was happy the C's got who they got, I'll just say that. :D

He was 6'9 250 last year, so I'm not sure I'd call him undersized. He might give up an inch or two to some guys, but 6'9 seems about average. He dropped some weight, but he's still very strong, and he plays physical on top of that. When he gets it going, I don't think there will be many people who can guard him 1-on-1. Most people that are big enough to handle him in the low-post probably aren't quick enough to keep up with him on the perimeter. Somehow he got a reputation as an average athlete, but that's not even close to true. He may not have the hops or the wingspan to ever be a dominant rim-protector, but he moves very well for his size. We knew from summer league that he could score on the block and rebound, but in summer league he has shown some point-forward skills.

That chump the Celtics picked on the other hand... ;)

I watched part of the first summer league game for Russell and the Lakers, and came away feeling about the same as I did from the scrimmage.

Randle didn't have a great game, but he still looked good out there. He's quick with the ball, and has a wicked first step. I'm excited to see him contribute this year.

Clarkson had the best game. Pretty much as expected. He really doesn't need this summer-league, but they're probably getting he and Russell used to playing with each other.

Tarik Black played well, and should be a good backup for Hibbert.

Nance Jr. will get minutes as a rookie as an energy off the bench. He's got his father's hops.

Russell looked disappointing. He had some nice passes, but he coughed the ball up a lot, too. He's probably going to have to be a lethal 3-pt shooter if he ever wants to be a star in the league. He was actually surprisingly pesky getting in passing lanes, though.

Anthony Brown will not see the floor as a rookie. Upshaw won't either, if he even makes the squad. Those two are D-leaguers for sure.

The T-Wolves have a a lot of good, young talent as well.

Towns looked great out there. The quickness of NBA guys looked like it caught him off guard at first (Black beat him off the dribble and dunked on him early), but he'll adjust. He knocked down some jump shots, and looked really good in the low-post. His defense might have to catch up to his offense the way Anthony Davis' surprisingly did.

Lavine looked really good out there, and knocked down a lot of shots. He mainly just shot, shot, and shot, though. Clarkson was able to do a little more, and had some really athletic dunks and put-backs.

Magic Johnson on D'Angelo Russell:

"The Lakers need playmakers. We have to have guys make plays in different ways if we're going to beat Golden State. This is about who we're going to beat. In the West, you've got to keep up with Houston, the Clippers, Golden State, San Antonio, and they've all got incredible small guys who can do multiple things. And we needed that small guy that can do multiple things."

Looking pretty smart. Randles future is at the 3. He's too small for PF. We'll see.

Russell continues to suck in summer league. He's nowhere near NBA-ready.

Randle could maybe play the 3 eventually if needed, but I don't see him as anything beyond a versatile 4.

Both are essentially rooks so it's too early to tell but Randle's size will be a problem. He needs to get with Bass and work hard at that mid range jumper. He can make a good living if he handle the ball as well as pick and pop. He's not going to overpower people in the paint like he did in college. He got blocked at least 3 times just tonight. Defense is a big work in progress to put it lightly.

Lakers need to throw them in the fire and forget about wins to see what you got going forward.

You can't judge a player's potential just from the summer league. Russell has great potential; he just needs time to get better. The Lakers have invested in him with the draft pick, and they will have to show patience with him. Randle is recovering from a broken leg, and he may not be game ready yet.
