Deb Patterson Out at KSU

If you coach a lesser sport you can get away with not winning at a high level for a good period of time. But, when you coach basketball or football and make the big bucks, you are expected to win. I remember when Solich got fired at Nebraska. If I'm not mistaken, he won 10 games that year. ADs expect a lot when they pay out huge salaries.

Someone is going to have a pretty good group at the start. Romero is an outstanding freshman point guard. Lewis was a freshman. I think they only graduate Leick.

Solich knocked up a coed when he was married too. That was really the reason he got fired.

Yeah, I think so too. Really surprised at this but maybe a little more to it than just on the court performance. I have no idea but based on past rumblings a few years ago, it could be a combination of things.

I thought she was safe within Kansas with her off the court situations. Maybe, things are changing.

She's had other years where she didn't make the tournament, but I guess this was the worst season in quite a long time. I guess the off the court stuff was easier to put up with when she was producing better teams.

We are going to see several coaches get fired over the next couple of weeks.

At a million a year for coaches and then include that most of these programs are probably losing 2-5 million a year. Yeah, it has to be what have you done for me lately.

Patterson hasn't made many friends within the KSU administration or the alumni, but she had been winning until recently. I'm sure her off court issues could have been ignored if she continued winning.

Yes, the Frank Solich rumors around that time were quite... odd.

Solich was also two years removed from a national title (beatdown at the hands of Miami) appearance. He went 7-7 the year before, shook up his staff, then went 9-3 and got ousted before their bowl game. Their AD was a moron, but before they fired him a few years later, he at least gave us this quote:

I refuse to let the program gravitate into mediocrity. We won't surrender the Big 12 to Oklahoma and Texas.

So what does Nebrasky do? They gravitate into mediocrity (thanks Bill Callahan) and surrender the Big 12 to OU and Texas (by leaving for the Big Ten).

I'm sorry, this thread was about Deb Patterson. Did you realize that she gave OU one of our 14 losses this year? I guess that isn't a job-saving win anymore

KU didn't do well this year either. Bonnie's record this year was very close to Deb's.

What off court issues?

I'm not buying the off the court stuff, If there is some behind the scenes stuff and it was really that bad she would have been out the door, It's about what can you do now! She hasn't been getting it done since she had Kendra Wecker, Nichole Olhde and that entire team. Some of the players took to twitter to let the public know they are not happy about this, but most of the fans seem ecstatic.

What off court issues?

Michelle Voepel wrote about it back in 2006 in the KC Star. She wasn't very good to her players and assistants. She had something like 9 staff members resign from her staff in a 2-3 year period.

Kendra Wecker, who was the big 12 all time scorer at one point and a star at KSU claimed she was mentally abused by Patterson and that's why she became an asst coach (grad) at OU after she graduated.

Supposedly, Patterson forced her players to attend religious functions and overall was just not good to her players.

I can't seem to find the KC Star article she alludes to in this article. This was big news here in KC when it all came out. Trust me, a lot of KSU supporters were not Patterson fans and were ready for her to leave a long time ago. Definite off court issues with abuse of power and such.
