After the WVU game, we jumped up quite a bit in Ken Pom's ratings.

He currently has us as the 38th most efficient team on defense. If we can keep defending that well, and improve, we can win some games when we struggle shooting the ball.

Nice to see the defensive improvements though. The last three years we've ranked between 91st and 171st in the country. That won't win you many games.

I think Kenpom's ratings are about as scientifically valid as you can get when it comes to measuring the different facets of a basketball team. I don't know that it is a great predictor, yet it's hard to argue with his measurements/rankings of teams...they are pretty darn accurate.

Yep.

He is one of the few that uses efficiency, instead of just raw counting stats. Like you said, no stat is perfect, or tells the entire story, but with so many teams playing different styles and paces, looking at efficiency is about the only way to compare across the board.

Kruger and Sampson were cut out of the same mold when it comes to defense. They both know all too well that good defense is something you can hang your hat on when the shots aren't falling. And, with no one burning up the nets on a consistent basis, that couldn't be more true of what this team has to do to win their share of the games still on our schedule.

Personally, I couldn't be more pleased with the improvements we've seen on defense in the past three games. There's still work to be done. But if our kids continue to play solid team defense, as they have done lately, we have a good chance of breaking our postseason drought.
