Did Capel Save His Job?

After the three (McD's) stooges left us with nothing, he is starting over. All we can realistically ask for is improvement YOY.
I don't really care about what Ronald McDonald ranks players. I look at recruiting as an on the court thing. Those players weren't all that good. Gallon showed promise but if he stays we probably are in probation right now. I don't know if he could have stayed eligible anyway. Same with TMG. I don't think either one were really college material. I think we are hurt just as much by Tony Neysmith leaving. I think he would be as senior right now. Ray Willis leaving, etc, etc.

Do you have information which links Gallon to being academically ineligible?

I guess I missed the post where someone said we were suddenly having a great year. That type of statement would either be stupid or assinine … or both. :)

I get that. I do. Problem is, unless we want to set the program back even further, we need to temper our expectations for a year or two. IF we show improvement every year, we should be back in the tournament in 2013 or so, in which case, I'm happy. If we don't improve year by year, it's time to change.

Anybody that doesn't see that the OU basketball program is at it's lowest level for many years just doesn't want too. The program is in far worse shape than when Jeff took it over. It is all on him because of his personnel decisions. Some people say he is a good recruiter. Well recruiting is more than just getting them on campus. There is a retention issue so they can make a contribution to the program. He fails miserably at this. Gosh he has already lost one of his top recruits this year.

You say that you look at recruiting as an "on the court thing", yet you then offer criticisms of Tiny and TMG that have nothing to do with their on the court performance. Honestly if we want to analyze TMG and Tiny strictly on their on the court performance then you would have to say they performed pretty well for true freshmen playing in the Big 12 conference. There is no question in my mind that they could've both ultimately been all-conference performers had they had their heads on straight.

Completely agree.

Not if we lose the rest of the games by an average of say 20 points. We have to look at the body of work after the season. I don't think it's likely he'll be fired after this year. But next year is an NCAA Tourney or he's gone season.
if that is true, then Kelvin Sampson should have been let go after all those first round losses.

Why would you fire a coach after advancing to the NCAA tournament for so many consecutive years? That makes no sense.

Do you know how many programs in the Big 8/12 weren't making tourney those years? Only KU made the tourney every year from the conference (besides OU). That's pretty good company.

I'd say, program-wise, KS's last year just before JC took the job was the lowest point when you take everything into account.

Including last year? Please tell me you are being sarcastic? :facepalm

When did a 20-9 record, 11-5 in the Big 12, NCAA tournament bid, and top 10 recruiting class become rock bottom? Yes we were on probabtion but no off season play in 2 of the past 4 years (3 out of 5 years after this year), first losing season in 30 years (will 2 in a row after this year), that to me is rock bottom.

Will believe it when it happens... We beat gosh dang CU you would think we beat duke.

OU beat Colorado
Colorado beat Kansas State
Kansas State beat Virginia Tech
Virginia Tech beat Florida State
Florida State beat Duke

There you go. We beat Duke. :dance005:

j/k

I didn't say TEAM...I said PROGRAM.

We were going on probation, lost an entire recruiting class, our coach left and the issues that KS was involved in gave us a black-eye nationally. THAT is rock bottom to me...

Right now, the only thing rock bottom is our record. We have a few pieces that will keep the TEAM afloat back for next year. A few better players coming in next year AND, most importantly, kids that want to be here and kids that play hard. The wins will come.

In basketball, it's a short trip from the outhouse to the penthouse if coach can land THE player.

PS -- I disagree with the first 2 paragraphs though. NCAA sanctions are still possible from actions by an asst. coach hired by Capel who gave Gallon $3000. Giving money and making a few extra phone calls are 2 different issues and the former is much worse. The team last year was an embarrassment to OU basketball and OU athletics as a whole. Much worse than losing the last 3 games of a 20 win season in which we won 11 conference games and advanced to the NCAA tourney.

Keep telling yourself that. Kelvin Sampson is the biggest laughing stock/blatant cheater of college basketball in the past 10 years or so. The man can flat out coach, but the guy is a smug, cheater plain and simple.

I agree JC needs to keep players IF THEY CAN PLAY. If he gets another BG-type player, he'll more than likely only keep him one year and I'm sure YOU'D just hate that...

BTW, a COACH HIRED BY JC DID NOT GIVE ANYONE $3K...

Jeff didn't save his job because it isn't in jeopardy. He is in the same boat all OU coaches,he needs to put a competitive team out there and run a class program.Do that and wins take care of themselves.

How about when he won about 11 or 12 post season games in his last 6 years? The first 5 years I can see that although we were usually competing for near the top of the conference. Didn't win it but we were a top 4 or 5 Big 12 team most of those years. We've been a top 5 Big 12 team one maybe 2 years under Capel.

Capel isn't winning, that is why he should be on the hot seat. It is all about winning, that is how he should be judged. I am tired of hearing what until 2013 and OU will make the tournament.
