Did Capel Save His Job?

I just don't understand people anymore I guess.

Everything has to be in extremes. Someone can't just have a poor answer or be wrong....it has to be "congrats on the worst answer ever".

A coach can't have a "bye" on the ncaa's while the program is reestablishing some solid footing...it has to be "the NCAA tourney is no longer necessary at the University of Oklahoma".

Do people only understand absolutes now? Is there no longer any rational basis for objective, individualized judgment?

ridiculous.

You rail about "extremes" then you end your post with one. :ez-laugh:

Dude...you should be a comedian. :clap

So, because KS made a few extra phone calls, which at one time was not a violation, his entire legacy at OU is in question? I'm sorry, but that's an idiotic statement (for Scrybe, I am not calling Klegg an idiot :ez-laugh:).

And, sans Griffin, all of those players would help but we would need 2 of them at a minimum to get this squad to the postseason. We have 4 players starting who are not D-1 starters as they all have too many holes in their game. The only player on the team this year who could have started for Tubbs or Sampson at their current classification (frosh, soph, jr, sr) is Cade Davis because he's a complete player. Clark, Pledger and Fitz would provide solid minutes off the bench. Blair would hardly play except probably mop-up.

A FEW???? How 'bout HUNDREDS. He THEN did it AGAIN. It's not so much the calls, but the arrogance to do it again right after he sank OUR ship. I'm sorry, I like KS as a coach, but most of what people said about him negatively while he was our coach turned out to be true - an arrogant a-hole.

Talking about idiotic statements...you add ANY ONE of those guys to this team and they have a GREAT chance to win the Kentucky/Cincy games, they win the Chaminade/Arkansas/Baylor games. ALL OF THOSE GUYS were super college players. You must've started watching OU games after the Griffin boys hit the campus. OU has had some serious difference makers in the past 15-30 years. One player can change an entire team.

I can agree with some of this although I don't think it would make as big a difference as you mention, except maybe McGhee (and Griffin of course). I wasn't a big Terrell Everett fan myself. I actually think Taj Gray and Bookout were the best players on that team.

I just think this team needs 2 of any of those players. It needs a solid guard, like Price or Brewer and a solid 4 or 5. Maybe I'm wrong though. The 1995 team had Minor, but some really good pieces like Abercrombie, and Dion Barnes. I also don't think this team plays defense as good as any KS team which would help some of the talent deficiency. If they played better defense, then I could go along that 1 of those players would help immensely. But the fact they don't goes back to coaching.

I can accept that. Remember, we're not talking about that player making this team into a national title contender - just a tourney team. I don't think there's much doubt adding one of those players would go a long way in getting them there.

This team has some nice pieces when you put a real, go-to guy on the team.

FIFY

PS -- I disagree with the first 2 paragraphs though. NCAA sanctions are still possible from actions by an asst. coach hired by Capel who gave Gallon $3000. Giving money and making a few extra phone calls are 2 different issues and the former is much worse. The team last year was an embarrassment to OU basketball and OU athletics as a whole. Much worse than losing the last 3 games of a 20 win season in which we won 11 conference games and advanced to the NCAA tourney.

I laugh at those that say the NCAA has found no wrong doing under Capel. Either the NCAA has decided to look the other way or the hammer is coming. Its a fact Capel had an assistant coach with 66 text messages to a guy that gave Gallon's mom $3K. The assistant coach was swept out of town and Tiny's ship was pulled as was TMG's. Also Warren was coming back until this went down.

anything that spans 30 years needs to be reevaluated...and just because something was done one way "back in the day" doesn't mean it was the right way or even the best way.

In this case it doesn't even necessarily ring true.
I guess I don't understand what you're trying to say. Before this double batch of futility, we as a program, since 1982, missed the NCAA Tournament in ONLY the following years:

1991
1993
1994
2004
2007

That's not back in the day. That's getting it done for a generation.

and all those except for 2007 ended in an NIT at least.

It was 577 over 4 years which comes out to 12 extra phone calls a month. Violation yes. Shut down the program, no.

I would hard pressed to say we would be in/win all those games with adding one of the said players including Griffin. Chaminade and maybe Arkansas. This team just has too many dificiencies for one player to be added and start winning.

This is why I can't really get why people are saying it's so hard to make the NCAA Tournament. Maybe in 84 when there were 32 teams it was hard. But right now it's 68 teams I think. And 38 at large? I don't even know the exact number anymore. It's in the 30s. That's not that hard to get in if you have a good program. If OSU goes 9-7 in conference they will probably make the NCAA Tournament.

whoa!!!!! what!?!?!?! so, the NBA rookie of the year and quite possible a starter in the NBA all-star game... is only good for wins over chaminade and arkansas??????

If anyone in the country had Griffin right now they would be a top 10 team. He's that darn good. The Clippers have been horrible the last decade almost and they are playing pretty good ball with Blake right now. If he's at OU right now with the current roster, we are ranked in the top 10.

As I said - HUNDREDS. Oh, so because YOU don't think it's a big deal then it must not be. IT'S A RULE HE KNOWINGLY BROKE MANY, MANY TIMES, THEN DID IT AGAIN AT INDIANA. Do you see the pattern? Great Xs/Os coach; dishonest, cheater.

Well, then we'll just have to disagree. We were in all of those games and you're telling me you don't think an all-Big XII player wouldn't make a 10-12 pt difference on this team? ALL of those guys were PLAYERS and would easily be worth 12-15 pts a game on this team. It's all speculation, but I think it's fair to say.

you prolly hate Barry Switzer then huh?

We were a top 10 team with Griffin and a very experienced team around him. Throwing Griffin into this team that has less talent and less experience dosen't not equal an instant winner. And all of the said games were away from home.

Actually, we were more of a top 5 team that year.

THIS TEAM has some talent. It's young, but has talent. In fact, I'd venture to say Fitz would take A TON of pressure off BG because of his ability to score in the post. Cam is VERY comparable to WW. Cade is much like Crock. Blair's game would go up a notch with a beast like Griffin on the floor. I don't think you're giving BG (and the other guys I listed) enough credit. They ALL were flat out, studs.

The NCAA is a thoroughly corrupt institution.

Kelvin Sampson is the man.
