Did Capel Save His Job?

Now we only go though 10 minute droughts.

Here's our offense under Jeff C. Pass the ball around the perimeter, try and get to to the post who is double teamed and misses. Or sometimes throw up a 3. That's basically it. Very little guard penetration, almost no screens being set, very little passing to help people get open inside the paint. We don't get any open shot. We shoot shots that are at best 40% makes. Even in the post because we don't have an absolute freak in the post. You basically need someone that can make 50% from 3, or have a freak inside like Blake Griffin for this offense to really work. If you don't have either, your team will look worse than it really is.

I bet you can't make a list on one hand of the 8+ scoring droughts we've had under JC.

Also, you MIGHT want to watch this year's team play a game before making such uneducated statements. Shooting 40% for a guard is a pretty nice pctg.

Fact: Fitz (not a freak) is our leading scorer, shooting 53% from the floor.
Fact: Cade is shooting almost 44% from the floor
Fact: Pledger is shooting almost 41% from the floor
Biggest Fact: Of all the players who've scored this year, NOT ONE is shooting under 40% from the floor.

I'm just looking at what we do on offense. I don't see how it can work unless you have some freakish talent. It's got very little upside with average or even slightly above average talent.

I'm sorry Nick but your "challenges" to this offense have as much (or more) to do with the relative youth of the players than an indictment of the system itself.

You don't rail on the style of offense run and then proceed to use players' experience shortfalls as your justification. ANY offense runs poorly with inexperienced players.

If I were to rag on the offense I would point to a need for better movement/angles without the ball. Like to see more pass&screen away in that 4 out/1 in with a ball side backcut and replace when the post flashes high....or even just a cut and replace motion off the wing.

I read a stat a few weeks back that this years OU team was on record pace for 3 point % for the season. This was before the Tech game so I remember thinking how bad we were to be on a record pace for 3 point shooting % and still losing games by double-digits.

Let me recap since you seem to have forgotten how this was all started and you will see later that I have made zero predictions. Stop using all caps please.

My response creates a point of reference, the Tech game. And notice no prediction here. Just a statement.

I post some evidence of people speaking of the posiblities of going winless.

OK, I am now referring back to my reference point and the last time we were winless in conference. But since you think I am playing "what if" games, I will reword it for YOU (please stop using all caps its very annoying and rude). Before the Tech game we were 8-9 overall, 0-3 in conference, losing by an average of 17 points, had not beaten anyone out of conference, lost to Chaminade, and you are trying to rationalize that the odds of us going winless were close to us winning 7 or 8 games?

First off, in my line of work I use on-line communication a ton. Caps are intended to emphasize something, so get off your high horse and worry about yourself. Its my "style" ;)

Secondly, not sure why you had to re-quote a bunch of old posts. I read them ALL and knew exactly what you said.

I will end by saying..AGAIN...we were NEVER going winless.

We can't play defense. Offense is REALLY not our issue, although we struggle some there too.

I agree. Defense is our biggest issue.

Which is why I still maintain just one of the players you listed (sans Griffin) would help us much this year. Our defense is so putrid they couldn't score enough points to make this team into an NCAA tournament team.

I really miss good defense. Both Tubbs and Sampson played good defense, albeit opposite styles, but watching some of those bedlam games between Sampson and Eddie Sutton were classics because both teams played lockdown defense and it was always a gut-it-out game. I think this team could have won 2 or 3 of the games they lost if they played better defense, and would win more than 2 or 3 remaining. The lack of defense is all on the coaching.

I would also like to state I don't have a problem with our offense.

Offense hasn't been too big a problem for us, we've actually done a fairly good job of controlling tempo which has been huge for those statistics. Capel (like many coaches now) runs more of a free flowing system which allows the players to create, however, we just don't have the pieces. Luckily for us, our jump shooters have done a good job of knocking down shots...otherwise this conversation may be different.

My one complaint on the offense is that we sometimes allow the defense to push us too far away from the basket. Lots of times there are 15-20 seconds left on the shot clock and we're still 25-30 ft from the basket. Doesn't give us a lot of time to make the defense work.

That's probably a good point, but I guess it would've been better to say "one of those guys in their prime" insinuating that they were proven. I think that's one of the main things this team misses - an experienced stud to grab someone by the jersey and tell them to play friggin defense...defense is all about "want to" and hustle. I think they hustle, just don't have the "want to" which is understandable for most young players.

Agreed...must be something in the water because OU's and the Thunder's rotations are flat out awful. Guys who are two passes away are not in position most of the time.

yep. I think it's more a ballhandling problem than one for the offense.

In addition to this, if Fitz could stay out of foul trouble, our offensive statistics would go up even more.

I reposted because YOU are putting words into my mouth that I NEVER said.

YOU never said we weren't going winless the FIRST time because you NEVER posted until AFTER the two wins.

Fact, has a lot to do with it. This is where I look for Caple to make some adjustments though. The free flowing offense won't work all the time and we're going to need more sets to counter act opposing defenses. In addition, the more free flowing we are will probably lead to increased possessions, which does not play into our favor.

Hopefully with a full week off we can get some sets put in.

This is why I can't really get why people are saying it's so hard to make the NCAA Tournament. Maybe in 84 when there were 32 teams it was hard. But right now it's 68 teams I think. And 38 at large? I don't even know the exact number anymore. It's in the 30s. That's not that hard to get in if you have a good program. If OSU goes 9-7 in conference they will probably make the NCAA Tournament.

Because we were one of only a HANDFUL of teams with those kind of stats. It is NOT EASY to keep a program in the NCAA Tournament year in, year out.

That aTm ballclub that went winless had more talent than this OU team. They had 2 NBA players in Antoine Wright and Acie Law IV. Because a team with good talent went winless, it was not far-fetched the 2011 sooners could go winless. I was one of the posters that actually predicted 1 conference win, but I wasn't sure where it would come from. I over-valued Tech because they have much better talent than us (IMO), though.

So the fact that one slightly more talented team went winless made you believe that we had a real chance of it? Did you just ignore the fact that mutiple teams that had less talent than we have found a way to win a game, or even games?

I think panic and dramatization by others scared you in to believing we wouldn't win a game.

Name me a team off the top of your head you remember from the conference that had less talent than this OU team?

I'm sure one existed, but I can't think of it off the top of my head. I do however remember that aTm team and they had talent but were poorly coached.

1. Any team named Iowa St
2. Any team named Nebraska
3. Most teams named Baylor
4. According to some "haters" MANY of KS teams (of course, that makes JC a horrible coach)
