Ex Sooner Coach Passes

I went to a lot of games that he coached at OU. Enjoyed it.

He was called Bob "Go Go" Stevens because of his up-tempo style. OU hired him away from the ACC when he was coach of the year while at South Carolina. I think he was encouraged to resign from OU. He was a Colonel in the Marine Reserves when I casually got to know him. As a student at OU during the Viet Nam war, I ended up joining the Marine Reserves and sometimes served as his radio man. I remember him as a very nice guy who enjoyed his time at OU. I can't believe he was 88 when he passed. It sounds like he stayed in Oklahoma after leaving OU.

Some of the players he recruited to OU included Don Sidle (ABA), Garfield Heard (NBA), Willie Rogers (cup of coffee in ABA), Clifford Ray (NBA). His freshman coach, John McLeod, took over for him and went on to coach in the NBA and Notre Dame.

One of the players for Stevens used to post on various OU boards and went by "highjumper" because he played basketball and was a high jumper on the track team at OU, but I haven't seen him post for some time now.
