Football question

We popped a 60-70 yarder this week.. otherwise we rushed for like 70 yards for the whole game. I would not say hes fixed anything yet and if anything, the moron has doubled down on the 1 yard per carry mateer QB run game.. he doesn't even play our best RB correctly

Take away Robinson's best carry and he's still averaging over 5 YPC on the other 19 carries (but also...that play did happen). Blaylock also at about 4.5 YPC over the past 2 games.

Got a chance to listen to the pod you guys were talking about and it just highlights again why I don’t trust Gabe as an analyst. A month ago he was discussing Mateer as a first rounder. All summer and spring he hyped up Gibson as a physical freak who would change our passing game. He’s talked about Burks as a game changer for two years.

Mateer was never close to that. It was obvious in noncon. He constantly made bad decisions and risky throws. How Gabe and other professional analysts missed that is beyond me. Burks has never remotely looked like a dynamic player. And Gibson … now he’s talking about how he can’t create any separation.

Obviously as fans we don’t have access to the all 22 video. If he’s right in saying that there were a lot of plays where the primary read was wide open for easy scores, I think it again points to our talent (specifically our QB) more than just our OC, who so many people view as the main person to blame). All of which is to say, there are so many issues with this team. I just don’t get how people think we should keep things in place and hope it’ll get better under this head coach.

All playoff hope is gone? We’re 6-2. I don’t think we’re going to make the playoffs but I’m certainly not willing to give up already. Good grief man.

And Hawkins isn’t the future at QB anyway. Play the guys that give us the best chance of winning. Always.
agree with this. While the playoff hopes are hanging by a dingleberry, there is still much to play for this season.
I really don't think hawkins will ever play anymore meaningful snaps at OU

Maybe. Until this week, we simply needed 24 points and no bad turnovers to win every game. This was the first time this wasn't true.

Most on here had also pointed to Arbuckle's inability to develop a run game as the reason he was bad. Assuming these past two games aren't fools gold (it might be), he fixed a massive issue mid-season, which is no small feat.

Again, Arbuckle may not be a star, and I've never felt he was. But I don't support jumping to overly aggressive conclusions based on small sample sizes. These next few weeks will be telling about how far our team has progressed.
I'm not out on arbuckle by any means.

But why didn't even see that running the ball in Fall camp was going to be an issue and make changes proactively?
Why didn't anyone realize it and make changes after any one of our games?

The main thing that separate coaches IMO is their ability to be proactive and creative before the issue is known to other teams.
The the thing that will sink a coach/team is a coach's pride to not adapt.

I'll give Arbuckle credit on changing some things mid season...but why wasn't addressed earlier?

It very well could have been that we knew our front 7 was just ridiculously good and thought that was the reason why the run game wasn't working.

giving up too many 3rd and longs was a "thing" when he was here before as DC.
very true...a large portion of the fanbase was ready for him to go because of it.
it is frustrating but I guess his style of defense leads to that.

Let's also not forget the Ole Miss is a legit team. THey should have beat georgia on the road and they should be undefeated right now.

Anyone can point this stuff out after the fact, though. Good analysts would have been able to see this coming after the first three or four games. He, on the other hand, referred to Mateer as a possible first round pick, even after he had turned the ball over repeatedly and thrown tons of dangerous passes against bad opponents. He and Teddy also expected Mateer to be among the best quarterbacks in the conference. And even though he does criticize the line, he continues to stand by BB. I get it, he played for him. But you can’t let personal feelings affect your ability to see what everyone else with two eyes can see.
Everyone (including NFL scouting analysts were saying the same thing) was saying the same thing.

You're definitely right. Its so dumb to fire a coach right now with any sort of buyout imo. Just put it into players instead and wait til hes out of contract... oh and also, dont give good 'ol boy contract extensions you absolute moron joe castiglione
Yep...spend that buyout money on players and you are almost instantly competing again

No, I disagree with this very much. I looked up a lot of mock drafts and didn’t find him mentioned as a first rounder in any of them. There were definitely people who viewed him as a likely draft pick, maybe even a day two guy, but I never saw him projected in the first round.

They base a lot of their preseason commentary on limited practice sessions and what they are being told.
You can't really fault them for that.

Eh. Lots of objective national analysts had concerns about Mateer based on what they saw from him last year. Gibson was a low level transfer, and Burks never made a dynamic play last year even before he got hurt. But also, no analysts have unlimited access to practice. You have to be able to evaluate guys despite that. It’s how good national guys do their jobs. And you can’t just believe a coaching staff or teammates when they hype every player as a stud.

there are/were plenty of guys open in the last 3 weeks .. Mateer has just not been seeing the field ..

I’ve been saying mateer hasn’t been as good as he needed to be since the Michigan game. He misses some easy throws and he holds the ball a little too long. We had several plays against Michigan that would’ve been huge and led to many more points but he just missed. He did the same thing against Auburn. And it’s been worse against Texas and Mississippi.

His throwing mechanics are not good. I can’t believe he’s made it this far playing like that. I do think he can be better and has been better this year and last. I also think he’s not an NFL QB until he improves his mechanics and his decision making.

After being spoiled with elite QB play for so long, it’s hard to swallow the level of poor QB play we’ve had to endure for the last few years. The last 2 years make Gabriel look like tom Brady and Gabriel was good, not great.

mechanics are a distant second to his seeing the field (or NOT seeing the field)

You’re being disingenuous. This year’s team would crush the big12. Not even close.
We struggled to beat a bad Auburn team. Texas is barely a top 25 team. Same with Michigan. There are several teams in the Big 12 that would be able to compete with us, and those are the games where we usually make critical mistakes at critical moments to lose games. FFS, there are several teams in the Big 12 better than the KU team that beat us two years ago when we had a better QB, better WRs, and a good RB (Walker) who the brain trust benched for the first quarter. It is far from a given that we would win the Big 12. We would have a shot, but there are plenty of teams that could play with us.
