Football question

What gives you confidence that hawk is close to mateer?
I'm not a big hawkins guy, it's really more of an indictment of mateer.

I don't think mateer has shown a whole lot better. He likely wins just on experience right now, but hes overall prolly better at taking care of the ball at this point in both of their careers and is just overall more stable

A case could be made that hawkins might be better (or has a higher ceiling) but i won't be making that case on what I've seen so far from him

My thoughts too. OU has the formula so I don’t think benching Mateer is good for the locker room. But I would like to see some creativity to utilize Hawkins’ strengths. I think the offense needs some juice. Maybe he gets it going.

Hawk should never take another snap at quarterback. A good offensive staff might be able to find a way to use him in the running game, but not at quarterback. We apparently only have one healthy running back who is willing to play. I’d have more confidence in Hawk as a runner than Kanek.

You can switch the year from that page.

To be clear, the difference between Mateer and Baker is MASSIVE. 20 points is huge. And that's the same gap between Arnold last year and Mateer this year.
So effectively mateer is precisely in the middle between the two?

Yeah you got nothing. Thank you for playing.

You’re the one that wanted to play the data game. I was just comparing the tendencies of both qbs and how they’re similar. We should have never had this time wasting conversation.

Yes, I wanted to play the data game, but you aren't providing any.

I've got everything on my side in terms of data. QBR is the most validated metric we have for QB play and correlates better with MVP and Heismans than any other metric. EPA is the best metric to estimate an impact per play compared to what is expected in that situation, with other advanced stats like SP+ factoring level of competition. I've got our overall record. I've got our red zone scoring percentage.

And you combat that with the lone fact that Arnold doesn't throw many interceptions? And then say you have all the data? If you think that's true, then I guess we are wasting our time.

I’d encourage everyone watching the NFL game to pay attention to the play clock when the 49ers snap the ball when the game clock is running.

we don't need tua.
but mateer has regressed...his completion % against mizzou was 46% and according to gabe...he's making the wrong read/decision the majority of the time.
so it wouldn't take much to be an upgrade.
idk if hawk would be better but hopefully he's gotten better in practice and if we're down against LSU or at any time during the playoffs because of mateer....hopefully bv makes the right decision.
He has made the right decision by sticking with Mateer. It is absurd to even think about putting Hawkins in now.

Running the read option or some designed qb runs a handful of times a game isn't a new offense.

But our QB isn't doing great with pass protection. I think this is exactly the year to force the run.. particularly, by expanding it with new looks

The offense that had like 20 yards almost before half?
I thought Mateer made good decisions in the read option, but the line can’t run block.

I still prefer passer rating to QBR. QBR seems to put a lot of emphasis on the qb run. Most of the time when comparing QBs, it is to look at how they are as a passer and it seems like passer rating does a better job of that than QBR
passer rating doesn't take qb runs into account .. i think QBR does

I guess you should call Venables and let him know he can turn off the film room. Just look at the data.
Ohh, this is fun.

I guess you can call BV and Arbuckle and tell them they are starting the wrong QB.

Not sure what you mean by “close to being good enough”.

Close to acceptable? Is that better?

They really just needed another 7-10 points, considering how the game went, and I don't think they were far off from getting that.

They were stopped on 3rd and 2 when our only healthy RB went out with an injury for the play and our QB made the wrong read.
We were stopped trying to run for a 3rd and 1.
There were a lot of questionable no-calls on pass interference that could have helped us.
We started a drive on our own 47 yard line that resulted in no points. Heck, one first down and we would have been close to FG range.

I just thought they were a couple of plays away from probably having a pretty solid performance. Some could say that has been the case all season, but I thought it was especially true on Saturday. Then at some point BV said the defense has this, and the offense was shut down.

JMO. Nobody else has to agree.

Better STARTER
That isn't the kind of program BV is running, AND I think Mateer will look a lot better next year. I could be wrong about that, but I think most of his issues are fixable, and likely somewhat driven by the injury. I don't really see a world where he isn't our starting QB next year, so clamoring for a replacement is a wasted exercise.
