Football question

While I'm not shedding tears that DeMarco has moved on, I'm not sure how much blame he gets for Tatum. I know he was a 5*, but I can think of a boatload of them who never did squat at OU. One class (2008 I believe) we had THREE 5* players and only one finished at OU and none of the three were drafted in the NFL. 0-3: DE R.J. Washington, RB Jermie Calhoun and OG Stephen Good. These things happen...but if helping develop Eric Gray is what got him a promotion to the NFL, then I want to read his book on how to ace an interview.

so you don't blame dm for tatum being a bad rb.
does dm deserve any blame for recruiting a bad rb?

The same RB that every team in the country recruited, including the oft mentioned Lincoln Riley?

I would challenge you to think of a team that you think has great RB development. Then go look at their HS RB recruiting and see how many were hits. I promise you it's closer to Shohei's batting average than 100%.

i mean likely the entire time his son is at OU .. so for the next 4 or 5 years ..
If he doesn’t move up to OC quickly, he will likely be given that opportunity elsewhere. My opinion, he will be a fast riser. I don’t think he will be a TE coach for the next 5 years.

Yeah Gray ran for almost 800 yards in only nine games on just under 5 YPC as a sophomore in the SEC. It’s wild for anyone to suggest that he was a plucky underdog who turned into a good back because of Murray. The fact he hasn’t had a noteworthy pro career in no way means he wasn’t already a very good and complete college back before he transferred to OU.

He ran for 145 yards total in conference play as a junior. Then ran for about that many yards per game in conference play the following season, with basically nothing changing to the staff other than Riley's departure. Now you could say it's was all Lebby > Riley, but then you'd have to give him credit for the RB room under Riley. And that leaves you with 5 years of quality production from the RB room in 7 years.

Also funny you are praising a guy for 5 YPC in SEC while ignoring the fact that we have one of those on our roster while running behind an inferior OL.

Again, I'm not a huge fan of DM, but it's obnoxious to constantly talk about guys like Tatum that couldnt hack it at RB anywhere, but never want to talk about several backs with elite production like Rhamondre, Brooks, or Gray.

I don’t think witten will be at OU very long. He will move up quickly.

We have no basis for this level of hype. fwiw he was terrible as an announcer.. Let's wait and see and hope hes a good developer and recruiter of TEs first, before we even discuss losing him bc hes a Lincoln Riley of an offensive genius

I’m just saying, my opinion, he will be a fast riser. He’s a good leader of men, good offensive mind, good communicator. My suspicion is he interviews well. There are many people following his career with great interest and they will be all over him if he proves himself worthy.

All the talk about Witten being the next DM...that'd be a helluva an upgrade to our TE room.

I remember being really disappointed in Gray his first year at OU...I think more so of how he was used.

so dm didn't do a good job evaluating tatum. and he didn't do a good job coaching him.
but since many others also wanted tatum....that absolves dm completely?

I rewatched a bunch of the Grey 2nd year games last summer and both the early game announcers and our radio guys go on about how Grey "rebuild his body".

I would give that off season work credit.

I wonder how DM the player would have felt about being in a roulette rotation like he did on his guys?

I do agree that DM being able the catch the ball out the backfield was an advantage that we didn't have against UF. poster a while back.

Him being hurt for that national championship game will always be a huge “what if,” much like Quannas being a shell of himself in the FF.

if they had called the targeting on the first play of the game .. was a huge what if also .. (there was no ejection back then but it would have been 15 yards and set the tone) .

That no call is right up there for the most frustrated I have been for a no call

The "Schmitty effect" got talked about constantly, but it was pretty overblown. Riley guys put up better combine numbers with some absolute physical freaks. Our teams were just soft because they took on the HCs personality.
