Football question

Witten is obviously still a TBD with upside (but it feels like anything is an upgrade of what we've had at that position), but it is hard not to see the McCullough hire as a massive upgrade even if you think DM was a valuable coach. He has a massive amount of skins on the wall. Plus, the DB coach he brought in was a really good hire too. To me, BV has killed the offseason hires this cycle. Time to see how that pans out.

hires look great on paper.
hopefully the results will prove bv has turned the corner on his hiring decisions.
all 3 hires have no connection to ou. that's a good sign he's finally hiring the best available regardless of connections.

He's made many excellent hires with an overall very high success rate. What hire other than SL has been clearly bad?

Lebby had a top 5 offense and landed an SEC coaching gig. He's not perfect, but very real chance we're national champs if he never left Norman.

Don't think JJF or DM were even BV hires.

Nah. It's a cutthroat business. If you retained, you rehired them.
There is definite truth to that, but would have given BV a pass if he sent them packing after one season. Think about the corporate world. A new CEO joins a Fortune 500 company. That CEO has replacements from the start. If an executive subordinate is retained, it means the CEO is at least going to give that person a chance. I experienced this a few years back. Being in the I.T. profession, we were all bummed when the new CEO did not replace the moron we had at the CIO position. I remember saying to my coworkers that this was good news because we now get to see the CEO fire him for incompetence as opposed to simply not giving him a chance. I predicted he would get fired within three months...it took five WEEKS. That CEO was not going to take responsibility for keeping a substandard CIO in place.

If a football head coach inherits substandard assistants and keeps them around for multiple years, he's attached to them as if he hired them himself. That's just real world stuff.

I don’t agree with this. Had Lebby stayed, yes the offense would be better but national champs? No. Do you remember the hurry up and punt offense against osu and others? I’d say we win a playoff game or two but thats it.

I completely agree that he has to take ownership of staff he retains, but hiring and firing are completely different skillsets. If you want to say that he's like Bob in that he has too much loyalty and should be more ruthless, that's fine, but I don't see the issue with his hires outside of Littrell.

You act as if BV is the only one making these decisions. Brent almost fired everyone on offense during the disaster of Littrell offense. He was persuaded not to do that and only fired Littrell who was a friend of his. JJF and others were shielded by those above BV. Everyone wants to blame Brent for everything but there are others in the building that make decisions too.

Now, I believe we have a better leadership structure that is focused on winning instead of other things. Brent has shown the ability to make hard decisions and fire those that need firing and make the needed changes. He’s done a great job at filling those position this offseason. He has remade the program and we are in the best shape we’ve been in for at least 7 years. We are building towards a championship and BV is leading the way.

So Brent is leading the way, but people above him have control over hiring decisions? Or is that if something goes well, Brent gets credit, and when something doesn’t work, he gets a pass?

I’m thrilled JJF and DeMarco are gone. Just about anyone should be an upgrade. I knew nothing of the new RB coach or DB coach till we hired them, and I’d guess the same is true for most of you, so I have no idea how good they’ll be. I do know that regardless of who we hired, the OU media would immediately declare them a great hire, so I put no stock in that. They could have hired my next door neighbor and the “insiders” would have immediately said, welp, if Brent wanted him, that’s good enough for me. It’s hard to know whether head coaching hires will pan out, let alone assistants. The RB coach has very small shoes to fill, but the DB coach is following a guy who did a very good job IMO.

Our new RB coach had two children that played for BV, so I think damn near everybody who follows OU football closely knew who he was.

We lost our CB coach, which is a position you constantly complained about all year, but I guess he was the key to our defense now that he's gone. He's been unequivocally the worst defensive coach we have. We have perhaps the best defensive coaching staff in the country, so that's not to say he wasn't any good, but I think you're the only person bothered by his departure.

Who cares if his sons played for Brent? What does that have to do with his coaching? You like to pretend like you’re an expert but I am confident you couldn’t tell me the first thing about his coaching.

And as to your second point, nice to see you continue your lying ways. A liar can’t change his stripes, apparently.

It was a major talking point in the offseason that his sons transferred from the school he coached at. His name has come up several times, and you might not know what RB developed the #1 RB prospect in this draft, but don't assume the rest of our fanbase has such limited knowledge. Several national guys like Wiltfong have praised the hire.

If you ever feel like joining the conversation instead of fumbling over weak personal attacks that aren't landing, I would love for you to explain to us what defensive position groups were clearly worse than CB. Your first compliment of the guy came after he left, per usual.

I think the point about the RB coach is that people within the fandom DID know who he was and were more inclined to keep up with him a while back because of that. He was the RB coach at ND which is a very prominent position coaching position in CFB and has produced. Dude has been nails for over a decade as an RB coach

so it turns out there is a connection between mcullough and ou....
he was rb coach at indiana when kevin wilson was head coach.
that's the kind of connection i don't mind tho
