Fran and Smart

I like Fran. A lot.

He's in a tough position with James at OU. Easy to tell he goes out of his way to not be OU biased. But it probably goes too far. Like a youth coach that is much harder on his own kid. Tough position for him to be in.

I'm still a fan of his. He knows what Kruger and OU are building - and what a great story they are this season already.

Here is my thought on Fran, his son could have walked on at any program in the B12 to learn about basketball. He came to OU, presumably with his fathers blessing, to learn from the best.

Here is my thought on Smart, Smart is basically Willie Warren in college and the NBA, no disrespect to either, they are in the 99th percentile of basketball players on the planet, but they are limited.

Smart is better all around than Warren.

Good to see you posting again, Mr B!

James is at OU b/c of the journalism school.

Frank talks highly of Dallas players because he lives there.

If you took a drink during Bedlam every time they mentioned Smart or showed Cobbins you would have been dead by halftime.

Fran wasn't a great head coach and his announcing seems to be taking the same path. He has not been near as good on any telecast as he was in the past.

Yep, Fran is Captain Obvious and his Marcus Smart (Superman!) obssession is annoying but I still like him.

Yesterday's broadcast was so pro-oswho as to be laughable. So was the broadcast of the game in Norman. And last year's Bedlam matchups.

That Fran's son is at OU excuses it not a bit. He's a walk-on, for pete's sake.

This is what hype of the sort that has surrounded Smart from the day he set foot in Stillwater fosters: skewed coverage that cheats the other athletes (and especially those on the opposing team) of their due. Fran and the other announcers (or, perhaps more accurately, their superiors at ESPN) are never content with just telling the story of the game as it happens. Instead they decide in advance that one player (and the team he plays on) are going to be the story, no matter the results on the court.

They went on and on yesterday about how oswho can work their way back into tourney contention. Maybe they can and maybe they can't, but how about discussing how OU is a virtual lock for the tourney, where the Sooners might be seeded and how they can possibly work their way into a higher seed? That never came up (or if it did, I didn't hear it).

Exactly, and it was never more evident than last year when in the waning moments of an OU win and a terrible performance by Marcus Smart, ESPN proceeded to show a Marcus Smart "highlight reel". It was laughable.

If he doesn't know how to call a fair game without adding all the opponent BS, he should disqualify himself from calling OU games. It's not like his son is the star of the team or even playing except for a few games! His commentating of OU games this year is really bad.

Someone please explain to me how Marcus Smart is better than Willie Warren without citing "intangibles" after the dude got suspended for violence against a fan. Other that Willie's better success as a freshman on the court, their careers are incredibly similar.

I didn't think it was that bad yesterday. Earlier this year? The game in Norman last year? Yeah, it was pretty bad. But both of those games, ESPN had decided to run a big Smart story, promo-package deal, so they probably had the announcers setting that stuff up all game. Last night, there was no Smart, and no big OSU fluff piece, and I didn't think Fran was too bad. I'm sure some of you will disagree.

i don't like Fran much.

he can never decide which horn to blow, the refs are letting them play (loves it)....or the refs are sending a message (loves it).

it's hokey. no principle to what he says.

Fran and others like him have made it impossible for Smart to be human. "They" go on and on about him constantly - even when he doesn't deserve it, which is most of the time.

There was a time when I thought nobody could live up to such expectations; but on second thought, he has lived up to none of the expectations, so the constant praise is bewildering to me.
