Hoping for a graduate transfer big

According to this article, OU and Syracuse have extended an offer to Gillon.

He'll get his degree next month, so he could come in as a graduate transfer who would be eligible to play immediately. Averaged 13.2 ppg (second on the team) and 3.8 assists at CSU last season. Obviously a point guard who would be an insurance policy in case Strong doesn't work out.

might also be an option to keep Woodard more at the 2 spot like last year than the PG spot next year

Yep. I thought about that, too. The only problem I see is size. Woodard and Gillon are listed at six feet or under (Gillon at 5' 8" on one web site). I can't see LK going with a guard lineup that small.

I don't think this kid is looking to be a backup on a team like OU. If he's getting recruited by us, he's getting recruited to start.

if he played great D, then I would pick him up. We need someone who can pressure and stop any penetration.

His stats don't seem to make you think he'll be substantially ahead of Strong. I realize it's only junior college but Strong had much better shooting percentages from both the two and the three and both were solid over 80% free throw shooters. Their assist to turnover ratios were about the same.

Gillon shot 39% from 3 as a junior, then dropped to 33% his senior year while his 2 point shooting was below 40% both years. Strong was 48% from the field and 42% from 3 last year. Both seem to be about the same size.

Junior college competition has gotten so bad that I don't think you can take any stock in the stats. It's just meaningless.

I believe he's from Texas, which should help us, and that helps explain a lot of Texas schools looking his way. Syracuse during the winter is not what a normal Houstonite dreams of.

I don't see Gillon being a fit. That would give us 3 PGs all at 6' or under. Playing 2 small PGs also keeps James, McGusty, or Grandstaff off the floor. Next season is where LK needs to be one where they maximize minutes for the young guns in non-conference games. Build for the future. JMHO.

I guess they could RS Strong since he has had some shoulder problems.

If Strong isn't at full strength (did you see what I did there?) we should go with either Woodard or McGusty at point. There is no need to add a transfer who is neither an exceptional shooter or an assist machine.

As far as the junior college stats, three point and free throw shooting is applicable no matter what is the competition. Other stats might be dicey but you have to be a good shooter to record 42% on your 3s and 85% on your free throws.

if strong turns out to be a pretty typical juco quality wise, then this guy could be an integral piece that also doesn't hurt any freshman PG recruiting prospects..

You should always add more talent (unless character issues)

The Gillon news would seem to indicate they would much prefer to leave Woodard off the ball.

I agree. I don't see the point of bringing in a 1 year guy on a team that isn't likely to compete for a conference title or be poised for a big March run. Let's get those young guys minutes so that we are at that point in a year or two.

There is a point if you want to keep Woodard on the wing. If Coach believes this gives us the best chance to be successful, I'm all for it. The young guys who can play will play. No ones development will be stunted because we signed this guy. He's physically mature lead guard who can attack the lane and kick. He seems to ba able to knock down jumpers and guard decently. If he makes us better, let's do it.
