If you support Capel you don't have OU BB pride

i remember having this conversation about capel commenting about a standing O. I think i came to the conclusion that it was taken out of context

This is amazingly credulous.

To some extent every coach will give the company line, sure. But, I truly believe Capel likes it here. Is he happy with the current status of things? Probably not. He's not about to jump ship, though.

I know why capel will never leave....

Suggesting Capel wants to leave is truly absurd

I'm certainly not suggesting it as I said earlier I wasn't totally convinced he wanted to leave but a few events have given me pause (to my belief he's totally happy in Norman).

I don't think it's "truly" absurd because he has flirted with other opportunities since he's been in Norman. The question is was he flirting with other jobs like Kelvin was known to do early in his tenure trying to secure a raise, or was he flirting with other jobs like Bob did with Florida in 2001 when he was ready to head to Gainesville? I don't know the answer to that.

How do you know he's flirted with other jobs? Just because pundits have speculated that other universities may be interested in him filling their opening? Doesn't mean he was ever interested in them.

If he wanted to leave, he would've left after the Elite 8 year or after last year. Isn't his wife now teaching at OU?

good point

I agree with much of your post, but...

We didn't lose our entire recruiting class (Hi Klegg!) -- Keith Clark, Bobby Maze and Tony Crocker were freshmen that year.

We also didn't only have Nate Carter inside. We also had Taylor Griffin and Longar Longar.

That team also had Austin Johnson, David Goldbold, and Michael Neal.

The repeated claims, as if it's a written-in-stone fact, that the cupboard was bare that season are nothing but revisionist history.

In fact, even with the departure of those three incoming recruits, Sampson left Capel more to work with that season than Capel left himself to work with this season.

Capel gets far too little credit for what he did with a bunch of role players that season.

Nate Carter was a role player that Sampson had playing the 3. He averaged 6 points and 16.7 mins per game under Sampson. Capel found a role for down low and made him a scorer. Her averaged 11.6 in 23.5.

Taylor Griffin - 3.2 pts in 11.5 mins.

David Godbold 5.7 in 23 mins.

Austin Johnson 3.1 points in 17.8 mins.

And Longar got 2.1 points in 7.2 mins. as a Soph under Sampson. I think he specifically is the best evidence for Capel's ability to coach. After showing no promise under Sampson, he scored 10.4 in 26.2 mins the next year.

Neal was the only player returning who had any level of success. He was a very good shooter and scored 12.4 in 30 mins.

The three newcomers were all true freshmen. To rely on true freshmen to do anything other than be role players is dangerous and these, while good recruits, were not supposed to be the top recruits from that class. Crocker had the most success as a freshman getting 8.6 in 23.3 mins.

Capel had nothing to work with and turned in respectable season under the circumstances.

Usedtobe1's account is very accurate in my mind. I think everyone thought Capel was moving us forward every step of the way. No one could have predicted the collapse of the team last year and Capel deserves to take the blame for it. But there were extenuating circumstances which to me warrant giving Capel at least one more year beyond this season.

While the current team is here because of Capel's own doing, he has done a very good job coaching them. They play hard and are improving. There is reason for optimism flowig into next season. In terms of coaching job, I see only one season that should go down as a failure(last year) when you look at the seasons individually.

The question to me is how much blame do you give Capel for the failures last year which led to this year's failures vs. how much credit you gave him for the success he had. The negative folks give him no credit for the success and all of the blame for the failure. Once Castiglione decided to keep Capel after last year, he needs to be given 2 seasons at least to see if he is on the right track. And I think he earned it with the work he has done.

Pretty much sums up most of my feelings on the subject. :clap

First off, John Blake had NO success before or AFTER being OU's head coach (as a head coach)...there was noo indication then, or since, that he could or would become a successful head coach. Blake was a solid recruiter....may have been a great guy, was very personable and related well to kids but fell far short of success.

As far as Capel...he HAS been to the Elite 8 nd had success before he came to OU.....he obviously has recruited talent (even though he has lost some of it)...I fell like he takes too many flyers on mediocre bigs and guys with questionable work ethic (at least in the past) but his current team plays hard and competes fairly well...he has recruited help for next year in Goff (size has been a huge problem and he has that)...has Osby coming in who will help with talent.....and has a couple of schollies to give (possibly more depending on who leaves).....

I think saying someone who supposrts Capel has no pride in OU BB is not only a stretch, but not very intelligent.....attack others because they don't agree with you????

I have a harder time reading posts from people who obviously have little knowledge of what it entails to be a coach, the decisions that are involved, or the knowledge to see the POSITIVE things that are going on. He deserves another year and he'll get it. I'd rather lose unknowledgable fans than the coach.

You guys are correct comparing Capel to Blake is a stretch, Blake was bad every year.

Doesn't change my opinion of Capel or how he has destroyed this program. Capel's roster is mid major at best. What conference could this team win? This is Capel's fault.

I expect more from our BB program just like our FB program. Why are you satisfied with this? Would KU fans be satisifed with this? heck no why should we?

If you are okay with this you don't have OU BB pride or you are fine with a loser.

So I guess everyone is okay with this current BB program? Why won't you answer the question? Also what conference could this team win?

You started maybe the dumbest thread in the history of OUhoops.com

You should feel proud of that.
